The strong winds from last night's stormy weather are still continuing 🌬️ Even Kada, located west of Wakayama City, experienced gusts strong enough to make us stumble at times 💦

For lunch, I had the curry set at "Kaduck" 😊 It was delicious with various spices.

Built in 2000, the torii gate at the entrance to Oyunohara of Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine is 34 meters high and 42 meters wide, making it the largest torii gate in Japan. At its center is the emblem of the three-legged Yatagarasu, a symbol of Kumano. Its majestic presence welcomes visitors amidst the ever-changing scenery of each season and time of day.

The Kuroe area in Kainan City, Wakayama Prefecture, was a town of artisans that flourished as a production center for Kishu lacquerware. The sawtooth-shaped rows of houses that still remain today are remnants of the unique town formation where pottery merchants and artisans lived.

The shrine buildings of Kumano Hongu Taisha are surrounded by cedar trees, creating a solemn atmosphere. Four cypress bark-roofed shrine buildings stand side by side. They were relocated and rebuilt in 1891 from their former site, Oyuhara, which had escaped damage from a great flood in 1889, to their current location. The main deity, Ietsumiko-no-Okami (Susanoo-no-Mikoto), is enshrined in the center, with deities of marriage and connection seated on either side. The shrine is designated as a National Important Cultural Property.

The first lord of the domain, Tokugawa Yorinobu (1602-1671), expanded the castle grounds after entering Kishu Province. He dug a trench through the sand dunes south of the castle to create an east-west road (present-day Sannenzaka Street), and built a southern moat and stone walls along the north side of the road, incorporating it into the inner citadel as a separate enclosure. The purpose of this area remains unknown to this day. However, from mid to late April, it is now covered in a profusion of colorful azalea blossoms.

Located along the Nakahechi route of the Kumano pilgrimage, this is one of the 99 Kumano Oji shrines, famous for its grove of "Nonaka no ippōsugi" cedars, whose branches uniformly extend southeastward due to the influence of topography, sunlight, and wind. The nine towering cedar trees standing on either side of the stone steps of the approach play a significant role in the scenic beauty of this secluded sacred site in Kumano, inspiring a sense of solemnity in those who behold them.

Shirasaki Coast in Yura Town, Hidaka District, Wakayama Prefecture, is characterized by its continuous stretch of white cliffs formed by uplifted limestone. The view from Prefectural Road 42, which extends from Shirasaki Marine Park, is particularly beautiful, with the contrast between the blue sea and the white cliffs.

The Gyūba Dōji (Boy on Ox and Horse) statue is located behind a Hōkyōintō pagoda at Hashiori Pass near Chikatsuyu Ōji on the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route. It is said to be a stone Buddha (created during the Meiji era) carved in remembrance of the tragic Emperor Kazan (968-1008) on his journeys. An inscription on the adjacent En no Gyōja statue dates it to 1891 (Meiji 24), suggesting the Gyūba Dōji statue was created around the same time. At 55.2 centimeters tall, it is surprisingly small and has become a symbolic presence on the Nakahechi route.

This stone statue has a story that continues to attract considerable attention today. On June 18, 2008, the statue's head was severed and lost. A search was immediately conducted by Tanabe City and local residents, but the head could not be found. In October of the same year, the head was restored using the same stone material and reinstalled.

However, seven years later, on August 16th, the head of the Ox and Horse Boy was found on a bench at a bus stop in Ayukawa, Tanabe City, about 11 km from Hashiori Pass. However, because there was a risk of damage if it were put back in its original position, it was left as it was in its restored state.

Today, as part of a training session for our group of tour guides, we hiked from Kohiro Pass to Hosshinmon-oji.

The weather was perfect, and we enjoyed the trek while admiring the fresh greenery. The section along the river from Iwagami-oji to Mikoshi Pass is particularly pleasant, but the view near the bridge by the Jagata Jizo statue is especially picturesque ✨

A nationally designated Important Cultural Property. The main hall and worship hall, with their vibrant colors, inherit the style of the Azuchi-Momoyama period. The early Edo period carvings and murals by the Kano and Tosa schools surrounding them are a must-see. The Waka Festival, boasting a 400-year tradition, is held every year on the second Sunday of May.
