At first, it looks like a sea of purple. Then you notice the real activity happening between the flowers. A bee moves from bloom to bloom while visitors stop to take photos, each enjoying the lavender fields in their own way. This is one of those classic Hokkaido summer scenes that never seems to get old.

If you’ve ever spent summer in Japan, you probably know this sound before you even see what’s making it.

The steady chorus of cicadas fills the air from morning until sunset. For many Japanese people, it’s one of the sounds most closely associated with summer. It’s so familiar that it often appears in movies, anime, and TV shows to instantly signal the season.

This was filmed among the lavender fields of Furano, Hokkaido. The view is beautiful, but what stayed with me was the soundtrack. The combination of bright summer skies, endless rows of purple flowers, and the constant hum of cicadas made it feel unmistakably Japanese.

Visitors often expect to remember the scenery. What surprises many people is how much they remember the sounds.

Turn the volume up and you’ll hear what summer sounds like in Japan.

Have you ever visited a place where the sound was just as memorable as the view?

𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬?
One of the things that surprised me most about summer in Sapporo was how much of the city comes alive during festival season.

This wasn’t a staged performance for tourists. It was a neighborhood mikoshi procession moving through the heart of Susukino. A mikoshi is a portable shrine believed to temporarily carry a deity during festivals. Communities work together to carry it through the streets while chanting, cheering, and celebrating.

What stood out to me was seeing people of all ages taking part. Some carried the shrine. Others guided the procession. Many simply gathered along the streets to watch and support. It felt less like an event and more like a community tradition unfolding in real time.

The energy was impossible to miss. Busy city streets became a shared space where old customs and modern city life met for a few hours.

If you’re visiting Hokkaido in summer, keep an eye out for local festivals. Sometimes the most memorable travel experiences aren’t the famous attractions. They’re the moments you happen to walk into while exploring the city.

With boiling, bubbling, and belching sulfuric water -- about 10,000 tons of hot spring gushing out per day -- "Hell Valley" in Noboribetsu, Hokkaido is a sight to behold. Seeing with your own eyes the geothermal activities while being inside the crater of an active volcano is insanely out of this world.

From seeing Tokyo Tower in Japan to finally standing in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Still feels unreal that this bucket list moment actually happened.

Did you know that Tokyo Tower was inspired by the Eiffel Tower? Seeing both in real life makes the similarities so much more noticeable. Tokyo Tower even stands slightly taller at 333 meters.

Funny how some places live in your mind for years before you finally get to experience them yourself.

Lavender hills, rainbow flower fields, and endless summer views. Hokkaido turns into one of Japan’s most colorful destinations from late June to August, attracting travelers from around the world for its famous seasonal blooms.

The region is especially known for its lavender fields in Furano and the rolling flower landscapes of Biei, while places like Horomitoge Lavender Garden in Sapporo offer stunning purple fields with panoramic city views in the background. Summer is also sunflower season in many parts of Hokkaido, creating massive golden fields that perfectly match the island’s cool weather and wide open scenery. Some flower farms sit on hills overlooking cities, mountains, and valleys, making the views feel unreal.

If Hokkaido is on your Japan bucket list, summer might be the perfect time to visit.

There are times I wish I could jump through the screen and pull Punch away from everything hurting him. Watching him get attacked again while his tiny body is already covered in bruises and scratches is absolutely heartbreaking. No animal deserves to live in fear like this every day.

Seeing him scream, panic, and struggle to move afterward is painful to watch. He looks exhausted, stressed, and completely overwhelmed.

If you had the chance to protect Punch, what would you do to help him feel safe again?
