Salar de Uyuni - Ruta de Lagunas - Hito Cajon(Bolivia / Chile border)

It was cold, windy, dusty and never-ending awful washboard roads. Sometimes the path was not clear enough so we had to figure out which ways we drive by combination of offline maps & GPS tracker, there were sometimes that we had to literally find "our own path". Obviously we had made a mistake and got stuck in the deep sand, but luckily we had a friend who drove a 4x4 pickup traveling together and was able to pull us out.

We were driving only 20 km per hour next to a jeep tour who drives 100km mad speed on sand. The road conditions were seriously the worst entirely, which we realized after we entered Chile, destroyed all of our van's shocks, and we had to replace them in Santiago after a looooong waiting period.

In return of these painful experiences, we got to see the most beautiful sceneries I have never seen, the endless white of salt flat, hundreds of pink Flamingos on the lakes, wild vicuñas running in the field, and the vast desert of Atacamas that makes you feel like you are in the Star Wars movie setting, and most of all people you meet and share the meals and laughs together.

It was the most memorable experience in our entire Pan-American journey, and although we paid the high price physically but experience we had in this journey was indeed priceless.

To be honest, Bolivia was the country I didn't think much at first. It's only famous for Uyuni salt flat, and most of the places has harsh cold weather in high altitude......that was what I imagined. I was even hesitant to cross the border into Bolivia, because I was already tired from all the busy adventures we had in Peru.

Well, it turned out that Bolivia became one of my most favorite country in Latin America. Sure, there is not many super famous sites like Peru offers, but Bolivia has so much more than just Uyuni & La Paz.

Beautiful Cholitas dancing through the street in Guadalupe festival in Sucre, amazing wineries & BBQ in warm, tranquil town of Samaipata and city of Tarija, a modern neibourhood with the cutest Airbnb room in Cochabamba, and one of the most beautiful lake I've seen in Isla de sol /Lago Titicaca..... 🗻

In Bolivia I could find myself truly enjoy the journey again in much slower, peaceful pace. Sunshine, good food and people, simple things I discover made me amused and happy🌞

Machu Picchu has always been on our top list in this Pan-American journey just like everyone else. Then I started wonder why this is everyone's top bucket list, once in a lifetime experience after having to book entrance tickets 3 weeks in advance(some people book it a year in advance🎟️😦) , paying expensive train tickets and fighting through crowds of people in the morning rain.

Then I see this. Seeing this beautiful things in the clouds of mists and mountains. People might say that this is just another Inca ruins, but there is something magical about this scenery. Finally I was standing in front of the ruin, I understood why people are drawn to visit this isolated place.

As much as I enjoyed MachuPichu, it felt like I released one big heavy luggage from my back after I finished. It felt like one huge chapter of this journey finally finished after so long.

Before MachuPichu I've sometimes experienced some sort of anxiety about this much longer than expected(due to pendemic), continuous journey. Maybe because I felt like it is never ending, or maybe I just missed home.

When I finally saw this scenery it almost made me cry. I made it here. WE DID IT. And after finishing MachuPichu all the feeling of "I have to get there, I have to do this" has just gone, now I truly enjoy traveling again feeling refreshed, much more relaxed.

With all the costs & hussles getting here, I would still recommend people to visit Machu Pichu. I mean this is THE THING you almost obligated to do if you visit Peru, right? 😂

Traveling in Northern Peru was the most challenging, lustic experience for us in 3+ years of van life. Roads are rough and super curvy & bumpy, often times there are no campsites, no restaurants, sometimes not even a gas stations and of course no tourists or hardly see any human being on the road. I can't count how many times I had to dig holes to do my business 😂

Sleeping in above 4000m was also tough on our bodies in the beginning. (Maya🐈was the only one who enjoy the cold dry weather). But at the same time we could also enjoy the most beautiful landscape I have seen in America's, with a total freedom of camping wherever you want surrounded by the tranquility of nature, and the most of all, kindest locals in the area.

I only knew about Peru from Manchu Pichu & ceviche before actually entering the country. Now I am amazed how diverse the nature, people and food of this country and I love it more each days!

"Traveling - it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller. " - Ibn Battua
There is no right or wrong way of traveling, each one of them have its own beauty and story to tell.
For me vanlife is a whole lot of different experience. We don't get the same efficiency of visiting one place from another place like backpacking, but it allows me to slow down and deeply reconnect with nature, going to off the beaten pass and appreciate simple little things happening around me. Sometimes we just hang out in middle of woods that I don't even know the name, doing nothing special instead of sightseeing. Sometimes those moments I remember the most.

It's been a while again Instagram!
We are back in Chiapas for now, waiting for rainy season to end, and once again we will try to start our journey to Central and South America🌍(2 years delay! 😅)
Queen Maya👸🐈is glowing big and fast. She likes to jump up on the table all the time that I'm kind of afraid that the swivel table would break apart one day💦
Other than that, she loves to roam around in new places, likes to walk with us or riding on our shoulders, and bully and hiss at neighbors dogs😂💥 A perfect vanlife cat🐈👍
Anyway, I hope you are all well❤️

I know we have been posting only cat photos and movies like annoying parents.... 😂🐈
Living with Maya has been a big transition and adjustment for us, especially in the small space.
👆We had to give up a valuable space for her cat litter.
👆We can't just say NO every time she climbs up on the counter or table since there is literally no space to place a cat tower or stairs for her to get up & down exercises.(plus if we keep saying NO she holds a grudge against us😅)
👆It's pretty much impossible to make her a complete house cat as long as we live in a van and traveling but so far she's been doing really great being outside in different locations, and coming back to our van🚐 We are amazed how cats can be so smart and adjustable to new environments.
Even though she sometimes occupies half of our table, scratch our couch🤦‍♀️🤦‍♂️and bother us when we are watching Netflix, she gives us such a joy and happiness to our lives, we are glad that we made our decision to adopt her🐈 And plus, how can anyone resist this overloading cuteness?? 🥰🥰

Where do you see yourself in 3 years? Before I started this pan-american trip, I sort of imagined that I would go back to work in Japan after I finish traveling. But now, at the age of almost 40, I have absolutely no idea what I will do, or where I will be next year😂
This pendemic caused all of us for the very worst, and the best. It certainly gave me a time to step back and face myself, finding and accepting good and bad of me.
Some people back home think that I'm sort of in a long vacation that I have no stress in my life, and shouldn't complain because I have "such a good life" . But I made a decision and step out of my past life of routine, and the truth is, I also struggle, stressed out, facing consequences for doing this lifestyle just like everyone else living their every day lives.
People tend to judge the way of other people lives with their own bias filters. Only person who understand and responsible for your life is yourself, no one can truly understand what you are going through. None of us are in any position to tell other people what to do, or count on any sort of violence towards other people just because you think your life is not great but others are.
It might be a very naive thing to say, but I hope for the world filled with compassion and humanity. The world each of us respect and help each other's lives, pains and struggles, instead of pushing someone to the bottmless pit just to release their angers.
