Hiring contractors in Japan is getting harder 🏚️
Japan’s shrinking population is making skilled craftsmen harder to find, especially in renovation.
But maybe that also means an opportunity for young carpenters from around the world to come here and learn from some of Japan’s best miyadaiku and traditional craftsmen still practicing today 🇯🇵
Would you quit everything to work hard in Japan for this salary?

June 18th, come meet me at CSPI-EXPO 2026 🇯🇵
I’ll be at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, at one of Japan’s biggest construction and surveying exhibitions. Construction machinery, robotics, surveying technology, DX tools, and the future of Japanese construction all in one place. I’ll be at the Yanmar booth from 1pm 🏗️
See you there!

Why are old Japanese houses worth saving? 🏚️
Because modern Japanese homes come from somewhere.
The genkan, the raised floor, the modular rooms, the tatami proportions.
All of it comes from traditional houses.
But what used to be craftsmanship is now often factory-made, standardized, and replaceable 🇯🇵
Saving old houses means saving the knowledge behind Japanese architecture.

My $25K house bathroom was surprisingly easy to renovate 🏚️
Water is usually one of the most expensive parts of any renovation, but this abandoned Japanese bathroom only needed cleaning, wood, paint, and a few upgrades to feel like a small onsen again 🇯🇵
Would you keep the original bathtub?

My $25K house needed more space, not more walls 🏚️
Everyone told us to keep it exactly as it was, and I understand why.
But as a retreat, the house needed to welcome more people without losing its soul 🇯🇵
Build smarter, not harder. Would you have done the same?

Japan’s construction materials are getting harder to find 🏚️
But that also makes sourcing more fun.
You have to search, compare, and find creative alternatives that still fit the house 🇯🇵
Would you enjoy this part of the renovation process?

I just bought an old Japanese house in Sumida, Tokyo 🏚️
It’s not far from Tokyo Skytree, but the best part is how peaceful it feels.
Right next to a park, with views of the trees, this kind of calm is rare in Tokyo 🇯🇵
Should we follow the full renovation process on this one?

My houses in Tokyo are old, but they have character 🏚️
In Japan, many new homes are built fast, standardized, and not really made to age beautifully.
But older houses still have history, real materials, and a soul you can’t fake 🇯🇵
Would you choose new and easy, or old with character?

My $25K Japanese house wasn’t so cheap after all 🏚️
Japan has almost 10 million vacant and abandoned houses, but buying cheap is only the beginning.
Trash disposal, permits, water, electricity, materials, garden restoration and years of work all add up fast 🇯🇵 Would you still do it?
