The third and last of 2011 series of “Quality Improvement Session” ( or Mini-Seminar ) with Senior Officers from KLSM Pool was held at Mumbai on 06/Sept/2011, at ITC Grand Maratha. The attendees were a mix of senior officers from both Energy & Container Pool of KLSM floating staff, and inspite of 20% last minute drop-outs, the event was attended by a reasonably good number of senior officers from our pool. The Top Management from shore offices of KLSM, in Tokyo, and in Singapore, was present. The event being held at Mumbai, the presence from KLSM (India) and KLMA (India) was larger than the earlier such events in other metros.

The contents of this one day event were similar to earlier ones in other Metros, and once the President Kuboshima San gave his opening speech, the presentations from Capt S.B.Rele, Capt I. Juvale & Capt Rajan Mathur on topics like Piracy & BMP, Vetting Observations, Navigation Incidents, and Lifeboat Accidents followed through the morning session, and carried everyone to Lunch Break. Presentations from Floating Staff kicked off the afternoon session, and the first presentation was by Capt Ajay Sawarkar, who brought into focus his emotional attachment to KLSM and complete satisfaction of being a part of KLSM Family. Subsequently, Mr Sandeep Roy & Mr Vishal Sharma, both having served on ms Brooklin Bridge as Deck & Engine “Instructors” respectively, presented their experiences with their special assignments, and educated everyone on this latest step towards imparting good training to KLSM Cadets. The whole of the afternoon was then devoted to open discussions, and President Kuboshima San kicked off the session with the issue of “Professionalism” of seafarers. The two most important and burning issues ( The Piracy, and the Japan Disaster / Nuclear Fallout ) mostly dominated the discussions that followed. There was remarkable participation from all, the Officers and the Management, and everybody came out with their honest and frank viewpoint on various issues concerning the life and work on board the ships

Vetting Inspections, and recent inclusion of ECDIS Course (based on IMO Model 1.27) was another important subject, followed by a very useful exchange of information amongst all present on recommended measures to succeed in Vetting Inspections, to reduce accidents, to tackle piracy issue. President Kuboshima San was forthright in his admission that the Piracy has grown into a considerable threat, and his assurance of best possible measures to protect the vessel and her crew, was welcomed by the Officers.

The intensity of involvement by all present was just like the experience from earlier such events, and as the conference hall had to be vacated by scheduled time, for it to be readied for Dinner, the discussions carried on outside the hall, and back into the Dinner – even after the Closing Address by Capt Ibusuki San. At the end of the day, it can be stated that the event assisted in promoting better understanding, and gaining useful inputs for better future.
