Breakfast at Dōgo Yaya was just as wonderful as people said. A big lineup of Ehime mandarins, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and a refreshing start with freshly pressed mikan juice. The fluffy French toast I’d been waiting for was perfect. Before leaving, I grabbed one more cup from the famous “mikan juice faucet.”
We then drove across the Shimanami Kaidō to Ōyamazumi Shrine, home to a 2,600-year-old sacred tree. The quiet air felt purifying. At the roadside station, we bought so many local fruits and veggies that our trunk looked like a mini market.
Next was Onomichi, my father’s hometown — a place that always feels comforting. My go-to ramen shop “Aka” was closed, so we tried another place and it was great. Then came my longtime favorite: Karasawa’s egg ice cream. I’ve had it countless times, and my order is always the same — cream zenzai. Still unbeatable.
In Kurashiki, the white storehouses and willow-lined river were beautiful in the evening light. When the lights came on, the town turned dreamlike. We found a soba shop using takakibi millet and enjoyed it with Okayama’s mamakarizushi — vinegared fish said to be “so good you borrow rice from neighbors.” Dessert was kibi-dango and kibidango milk. A perfect final dinner.
One more day left on this journey.
「道後やや」さんの朝食は噂どおりの素晴らしさ。愛媛のみかんが種類豊富に並び、フルーツや野菜も山盛り。生搾りみかんジュースで爽やかにスタートし、楽しみにしていたフワフワのフレンチトーストも絶品でした。名物の“蛇口みかんジュース”を最後にもう一杯いただき、名残惜しくも出発。
しまなみ海道を爽快にドライブし、樹齢2600年のご神木が鎮座する 大山祇神社 へ。澄んだ空気に包まれ、心身ともにリフレッシュ。道の駅では野菜や果物を買いすぎて、車のトランクが市場状態に。
尾道は父の故郷で、何度訪れても落ち着く場所。大好きなラーメン屋「朱」はまさかの定休日で、久々に浮気したものの、こちらも大当たり。そして、1000回は食べている「からさわ」のたまごアイス。季節問わず、注文はクリームぜんざい一択。やっぱり最高。
そこから 倉敷 へ。倉敷川沿いに白壁の蔵屋敷が並び、枝垂柳が揺れる風景は夕暮れにぴったり。ライトアップが始まると、江戸の風情とモダンが混ざり合い、幻想的な世界に早変わり。
散策中に、きびだんごの原料「高黍（たかきび）」を使った蕎麦屋を見つけ、名物のままかりと一緒に美味しくいただきました。高黍そばはモチモチでコシがあり最高。岡山を代表する魚「ままかり」は、標準和名「サッパ」と言い、借り）に行くほどおいしい」ということかママカリと呼ばれるようになったそうで、シンプルな酢魚のお寿司です。デザートにきび団子と「きび団子ミルク」なる飲み物まで頂き、最後の夜もしっかりと郷土料理で締めました。
自然と食を堪能してきた旅も、残すはあと一日。
