Peter Tosh was assassinated at his home at Barbican in the parish of St. Andrew, Jamaica thirty-eight years ago on this date. Jamaica and the world became the worst for it.

Several of the injustices suffered by people all over the world today, are issues which Peter Tosh passionately combatted in song and in activism during his time. Many automatically identify the legalization of ma*****na as Tosh's marquee grouse with the "sh*tstem" and that may be a result of his hugely succesful "Legalize It" album released in 1976 with its most famous title track. Also on that album, the track "Watcha Gonna Do," in a quirky kind of manner depict the legal quandry citizens of Jamaica who identify with the w**d in its many facets, faced on a daily basis in post colonial Jamaica, and is a convincing reminder of Tosh's advocacy and his adept way of expression, musically and intellectually.

The Oxford Valley is an astoundingly naturally intoxicating or***ce, nestled in the centre of the island, snugly in a corner between the parishes of St. Elizabeth, Manchester and Trelawny. The community of Oxford District straddles the border of St. Elizabeth to the North East and Manchester to the South West. Balaclava in St. Elizabeth, Mile Gully in Manchester and Troy in Trelawny are the largest towns that are closest to Oxford.
The Oxford Cave is located on the Manchester side of Oxford District, a rural community at an altitude of 290 metres above sea level where citrus, tubers, coffee and sugar cane are dominant cultivations along the banks of the upper Black River. It has a cavern of 765 metres and is endowed with amazing stalactite and stalagmite formations. Back in the days of my pre-teens, the Oxford Cave was a popular tourist attraction. That died with the arrival of all-inclusive enclaves on the Jamaican North Coast.
My youth was punctuated with adventures within the Oxford Cave as well as the Gulf Cavern and other smaller spelunking treats on the St. Elizabeth side of the community.
Some 400 metres below the Oxford Cave is the Noisy River, a cooling sequence of swimming pools and sitting rocks, where the waters of the Black River. having plunged down from its origins in the foothills of Western Manchester near Troy in Trelawny, calmly meandered through an agriculturally endowed flat field, and snaked under a quaint 16th century stone bridge over which the Oxford Main Road heads to Auchtembeddi, some five minutes' drive up the hill, and on to Troy, some twenty minutes further on (whenever the Troy bridge is rebuilt and access to that town is restored via this route).
