This rugged and surprisingly unspoilt coastline of five villages is a marine reserve and requires special permission to enter – the first superyacht cleared to do so was in 2009. There are just a few tiny harbours, so it may be better to berth at nearby La Spezia and explore by a smaller vessel or by train (the area is largely inaccessible by car). Monterosso in the north has the best beaches; Roman Vernazza has a picturesque amphitheatre-shaped harbour; and, by land, Corniglia can only be reached on foot down a long flight of steps (much less effort by boat!). Manarola is surrounded by vines, while southernmost Riomaggiore is closest to La Spezia – and can be reached by road. The entire coastline appears to have stood still, with no sign of modern development. Terraces hewn from the rock over hundreds of years to cultivate grapes and olives cover the hillsides in this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

FIRE IN PALMA
Dockwalk received a photo on our page on Thursday, October 31, of a vessel allegedly on fire at the STP shipyard in Palma.

According to a STP spokesperson, the vessel was a 27-meter yacht in the shipyard for refit and maintenance when she caught fire at 8 p.m. The fire spread quickly.

“…The STP emergency team activated the emergency protocol and after no more than two hours, the fire was extinguished. Up [until] today, we don't know anything exactly about the reason for the fire; police are investigating.” Despite the yard being full, no one was injured in the fire and no other vessels suffered damage.

CREW RECREATION IN TUSCANY - SWEET NOVEMBER IN PISA
On Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 November the ‘sweetest’ event of the year returns to Pisa with a programme full of events, tastings and workshops to expand your knowledge of Italy’s artisan foods.
The new event this year is Extra Dolcemente, a challenge undertaken by 100 food bloggers who have come up with sweet recipes made with extra-virgin olive oil. The three most innovative recipes will be presented on Sunday, November 10 at 5.30pm and prizes will be awarded by Luca Lacalamita, pastry chef of Enoteca Pinchiorri and Maestro d’Olio Fausto Borella. He will also supervise blind tastings of extra-virgin olive oil and ice creams from Pisa’s Gelatiera de’ Coltelli.
Dolcemente has been chosen as the pilot project for the promotion of food and wine tourism. There will be a special ticket for both Dolcemente and the exhibition Andy Warhol - An American Story, which recently opened at Palazzo Blu. There will also be guided visits to other beautiful monuments in the city, such as the recently restored Bastioni del Giardino Scotto and the exhibition at Palazzo Blu, as well as other initiatives for tourists such as stays in some of the best accommodation facilities in the city.
