Ci sono storie che scompaiono senza fare rumore.

La voce di un nonno. Il ricordo di chi è arrivato da lontano e ha costruito qui una nuova vita. Il sapere di un artigiano. Un piccolo negozio dove, per anni, qualcuno ha trovato una parola gentile.

A volte pensiamo di avere ancora tempo per ascoltare. Poi ci accorgiamo che quella voce non c’è più, e con lei se ne è andata una parte della nostra memoria.

Saving the Burning Library nasce dal desiderio di prenderci cura di queste storie, insieme. Perché ciascuno di noi conosce qualcuno che ha qualcosa di prezioso da raccontare.

Sabato 17 ottobre ci incontreremo a Verona per The Diaspora Reunion – Verona 2026: una serata di incontri, cultura, testimonianze e un documentario nato dall’ascolto delle persone di Porto San Pancrazio, Verona.

Sarà un’occasione per conoscere persone nuove, ritrovare volti familiari e scoprire quanto le nostre esperienze possano avvicinarci.

📚 Le storie non scompaiono tutte insieme. A volte se ne va una voce, e con lei un pezzo della nostra memoria.

Il ricordo di un quartiere, il sapere di un artigiano, una tradizione familiare, l’esperienza di chi ha attraversato cambiamenti e ricostruzioni: sono conoscenze che vivono nelle persone.

Se non trovano qualcuno disposto ad ascoltarle e custodirle, rischiano di andare perdute.

Da questa consapevolezza nasce Saving the Burning Library — Salvare la Biblioteca che Brucia, il progetto di Associazione Evideos APS (WeDiasporan).

Il nostro percorso parte da Porto San Pancrazio, a Verona, dove stiamo raccogliendo testimonianze di residenti, commercianti e altri portatori di conoscenza.

Attraverso interviste e documentari tematici, vogliamo preservare queste esperienze e restituirle alla comunità, creando occasioni per incontrarsi, confrontarsi e aggiungere nuove prospettive.

Il cuore della missione è aiutare le persone a diventare protagoniste della memoria della propria comunità.

Ognuno di noi conosce qualcuno, un luogo o una storia che merita di essere tramandata.

Restitution: The Story Must Return to the Community

Saving the Burning Library is not simply about collecting people's stories, recording interviews and storing them in an archive.

We must return the knowledge to the people who entrusted it to us.

That is what we mean by restitution.

When stories return to the community, something important happens. People recognize faces, correct memories, add missing details, contribute photographs, identify new Knowledge Holders and help the story continue.

The process becomes a cycle:

Community → Documentation → Preservation → Restitution → Community

Because a Living Library should not simply preserve the past. It should help the community continue building its collective memory.

What happens to a neighborhood's memory when a small family business changes hands or quietly disappears? The documentary is coming soon.

During our fieldwork in Porto San Pancrazio for the Verona Pilot 2026/2027, we sat down with Ketty Arbetti in her grocery shop, OK Sigma. The store has been open for 15 years, but the enterprise logic behind it spans four generations.

Ketty grew up inside a supermarket. As a child, she spent her summer holidays running through the aisles, stocking shelves alongside her grandmother, parents, cousins, aunt, and uncle.

For her, retail was never just about transactions, it was a family lineage and an entire way of living.

"I was born in the supermarket. It enters your heart and it becomes your way of living. It’s this passion."

Today, her 80-year-old mother and 82-year-old father are still in the store helping out because it feels like home. Her daughter, Alessandra, represents the fourth generation, waking up at 3:30 AM to drive the truck to the wholesale market and restock the shelves.

Through Ketty's story, two distinct patterns emerge:

Survival Logic: A neighborhood shop functions as an informal anchor of daily stability. Neighbors visit every day to exchange words, build trust, and check in. If an elderly customer doesn't show up, people notice.

Success Logic: Long-term business survival isn't about discarding old ways. It comes from bridging the past and present, carrying the tenacity, honesty, and values of previous generations while adapting to how modern neighborhoods live.

"It is fundamental to bring the experience of the past together with the present... The past is what gives you solidity."

This is one layer of what we mean by Saving the Burning Library.

We often think of endangered knowledge as ancient texts or rare traditional crafts. But local, everyday survival logic, how small business owners build community trust, manage intergenerational handovers, and sustain neighborhood connection, is just as fragile.

When a neighborhood store closes without its operational wisdom being recorded or passed down, a piece of that community's living archive disappears with it.

The knowledge should be able to survive the knowledge holder.
