They call L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue the Venice of Provence, although it feels very different from Venice to me.

The Sorgue runs right through town, splitting into canals where you’ll still see old water wheels slowly turning. They’re leftovers from a time when the water powered the town’s silk, wool and paper mills.

These days, L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is much better known for antiques. There are shops everywhere, and on Thursdays and Sundays the market spills through the streets.

Would you stay here in Paris?
Hotel Bienvenue is a small boutique hotel in the 9th arrondissement, just a few minutes from Rue des Martyrs.

The location immediately sold me, but then there are the Art Deco interiors by French designer Chloé N***e. Vintage furniture, floral fabrics, graphic patterns and a hidden courtyard garden give it far more personality than your typical city hotel.

It’s received attention from names including Vogue, Architectural Digest, The New York Times and the Louis Vuitton City Guide, so it’s hardly an unknown address.

But what I liked was that it still felt small and hidden.
