We were in Siena on August 18 for the Palio.

We stayed the following day, when the city seemed to have slipped back into its everyday rhythm. But that was only part of the story: the Contrada del Nicchio was still celebrating its first victory in 28 years, moving through the streets with the whole Contrada behind it.

Walking through Siena at that moment meant seeing something that goes beyond the Palio itself: traditions that are not simply preserved, but still lived as part of everyday life.

And that is another way of discovering Siena.

The Chapel of Vitaleta is more of an idea than a monument. 🕊️
A small chapel just outside San Quirico d’Orcia, it has become one of the defining images of the Val d’Orcia.

What makes it powerful is not the size of the building, but everything it brings together: the road that leads to it, the surrounding hills, and a stripped-back vision of Tuscany that feels familiar even before you see it. 🌾

For anyone walking the Via Francigena toward Rome, Vitaleta can be a short detour to one of the places that helped shape the visual identity of the Val d’Orcia. 🥾

Rione Castello is the part of Bolsena you can easily miss if you stay down by the lake. 🏰🌊

It is the town’s oldest quarter, climbing the hill above Lake Bolsena through narrow stone lanes, medieval arches, and quiet corners that suddenly open onto the water. 🌿

For anyone walking the Via Francigena, it is worth coming up here. From Rione Castello, Bolsena is no longer just a lakeside stop: it becomes a hill town, with its history still visible in the streets. 🥾

The Mola Waterfall, near Formello, is one of the best-known waterfalls along the Via Francigena. 💧
Here, the trail still runs through the natural landscape of the Sorbo Valley, with water, shade, and the remains of an old mill. 🌿
Then the scenery begins to change: the Via Francigena slowly leaves the countryside behind as Rome, the final destination, draws closer. 🥾🏛️
