Where does Enduro’s value actually come from?

Before we redesign international Enduro, perhaps we need to understand the system that makes it valuable in the first place.

CREATE → TRANSFORM → CAPTURE → REINVEST ↺

Athletes. Trails. Racing. Media. Brands. Destinations. Participation. Community.

They’re not separate pieces. They’re an ecosystem.

And when value stops circulating, the system weakens.

So where does Enduro create its value — and where are we losing it?

THE FUTURE OF ENDURO — 2027 | V2

What should international Enduro become?

Five days ago, the Enduro World Cup was cancelled.

Since then, the media reacted, athletes and industry voices joined the conversation, and Crankworx announced plans for a new global Enduro series.

But perhaps we’re moving too quickly towards the replacement.

Enduro racing may not have failed. The professional architecture built around it may have.

That distinction matters.

Before we build another calendar, perhaps we need to ask what international Enduro is actually supposed to accomplish — for racers, privateers, teams, brands, destinations and riders.

From event → structure → system.

Enduro MTB is dead. Long live Enduro MTB.

That sounds like a contradiction. I don’t think it is.

Enduro as a way of riding a mountain bike is alive and well. Big days. Long climbs. Technical descents. Exploration. Fitness, skill, judgement and self-reliance. For many riders, it remains one of the purest expressions of mountain biking.

What is struggling is professional Enduro racing — and the model we have built around it.

That distinction matters.

I’ve been thinking a lot about where Enduro came from, what happened as the sport became increasingly professionalised, and what its move into the UCI World Cup ecosystem tells us about the gap between the sport people actually practise and the product we try to sell as elite racing.

Maybe Enduro doesn’t need saving.

Maybe it needs rethinking.

I’ve written the full argument on Substack:

ā€œEnduro MTB is dead. Long live Enduro MTB.ā€

Enduro isn’t the problem. The model is.

And I’m genuinely interested in hearing other perspectives — racers, organisers, brands, destinations, guides and, most importantly, riders.

What should the future of Enduro actually look like?
