It looks like it has always belonged here…
but the fico d’India actually travelled thousands of kilometres to reach Sicily.
Originally from Mexico and Mesoamerica, the prickly pear was brought to Europe by the Spanish after the discovery of the Americas, arriving in Sicily centuries ago. �

Sicily’s hot, dry climate and volcanic soils turned out to be perfect for it. From the slopes of Etna to the countryside and coastal roads, it eventually became one of the most recognisable plants of the island. 🌋🌵
Not native to Sicily — but somehow, completely Sicilian. ❤️

Today we were so lucky to take one of our favourite clients Baki and his human friend..🐺

Up to Rifugio Montegrosso and be able to see one of the not active Etna's volcanic vents from the eruption back in 1866 🌋
