Rickshaw Run India Part 1 - "WE'RE DEFINITELY NOT UP WITH THE COWS!!"

It seems we like to take our time with these! Absolutely no guarantee that the extra time means better production value though!!

Exactly a year from the day we set off on our Rickshaw Run with The Adventurists our first video is out! You can watch it here or in full quality on YouTube here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PVAxRDI-ZY

Under a new but temporary name of "Third Time Tuk-y", Charlie and Ollie embark on their third in their trilogy of The Adventurists' trips - The Rickshaw Run All India Edition.

4500Kms up the length of India in an Auto Rickshaw, or Tuk Tuk. From Fort Kochi in the south to Shillong way up in the north of the country, taking any way but the easy way!

But before they set off they needed to learn to drive a rickshaw, prep for the trip and make the most of The Adventurists' famous hospitality! Here goes - this is how they got over the line... the start line that is!

Day 15 - Rickshaw Run Complete 💪🏼🛺

4,602km - Fort Kochi to Shillong

An early start with great ambitions saw us set off on the last day of our adventure, with the aim of getting to growing root bridges to the south of the finish in Shillong.

The amazing sunrise filled us with hope and we were eating away at the Kms. But Tilly had a little bit of 2-stroke magic still to give, a cough here, a splutter there, and things started to unravel.

We thought a bit of careful driving would get us through, but on the steepest of inclines Tilly ground to a halt. Some kind locals helped us retrieve a mechanic from his morning lie in and he turned us around with some black tape, new spark plug and a scrape away of some of the grime that 4,000 kms leaves behind.

The rest of the day was spent fighting little engine gremlins and winding through mountain passes until we finally reached our destination. Shillong.

The finish line was in sight, Charlie was winding her way through the traffic like a local and we crossed the finish line at 3.45 with 15 minutes to spare, as always, maximising the adventure!

A sad goodbye to Tilly, an epic little 2 stroke rickshaw! We had our moments but as a team we smashed the Rickshaw Run India 🤙🏼 we really were - Third Time Tuk-y 🛺

Day 14 - Sunrise and Switchbacks

After our little dash down the mountain late the previous night we woke up to find our overnight stop had the most amazing sunrise view over the foothills of the Himalayas.

But being up at sunrise meant only one thing, getting on the road for a good day behind the handlebars! We immediately flung ourselves around numerous switchbacks and over rickety bridges before swinging through some lovely forests.

The inevitable came and the highways called us to make up some miles but this was made much better by playing rickshaw leapfrog with a couple of other teams.

Getting caught out of fuel in the middle of a train crossing didn’t stop us from admiring the sunset, once topped up we pushed on into the night to find our overnight stop in a small town before preparing to head south towards the finish line.

Day 11 - Workshops and waiting

Today was mostly spent looking deeply into the back of our little rickshaw. But before we got too stuck in to it we decided to find some inner peace before the madness and took part in a morning breath work, stretching, and mindfulness (probably) session on Assi Ghat next to the Ganges.

After being shouted at in Hindi, playing follow the leader and forcefully exhaling to the point of passing out we felt suitably relaxed and ready to take on the challenge of getting our new rattling noise sorted.

After a tour of Varanasi’s roadside mechanics, of which none said they could fix a rickshaw, we found a group who said they knew the best rickshaw mechanic in all of Varanasi. We parked up outside expectantly, only to be told he didn’t open until 11, we had been looking since 9.30!

Just before 11 he popped by, opened the back, revved the engine and concluded that it was a clutch problem. He proceeded to strip the clutch find the issue and get a completely new clutch installed within an hour for the grand total of £35. An absolute steal if you’ve ever been to a vehicle garage in Europe!

Just after lunch we managed to get on the road and eat up 250km to take us just south of Gaya to Mahabodhi Temple a sacred Buddhist temple where enlightenment was first achieved. Unfortunately there are no electronic devices allowed so no photos or videos. But take it from us, it looked amazing as it was lit in changing colours in the night sky.

Day 10 - Varanasi

We had another morning on the road to reach Varanasi. Arriving in good time for once allowed us to get settled, mooch around and do some shopping. Tilly had started making some funny noises but we decided that was a tomorrow problem! We managed to catch a boat to experience the eerie and mystical mood of Varanasi and sunset Aarti from the River Ganges, an unforgettable experience!

Fewer photos of Tilly the two stroke rickshaw of late due to the big days on the road and city destinations. We will aim to rectify this ASAP!

Day 8 - Tara

We had our first vehicle issue of the trip, thankfully nothing mechanical, despite having to poke around in the engine bay. Our backseat had come loose and we thought we’d put in a repair in the name of comfort. Halfway through the job, we were suddenly engulfed by a parade of school children who had won a national martial arts championship. This of course involved firecrackers, dancing and the loudest speaker system we’d ever heard, blasting music from the back of a truck.

We hopped back on the road for a rush to catch Tara the elephant at bath time at Kipling Camp in Kanha National Park. Charlie drove like the wind and got us there just in time. A peaceful break from the two stroke whine we’d become accustomed to over the last 8 days. We spent our time washing and playing with Tara before the sun began to set and she walked off into the distance.

In the peace of the moment, a very special question was then asked and we’re delighted to announce our engagement, (featuring a photoshopped Tilly the two stroke tuk-tuk)!

Day 7 - A long day and an even longer night!

Another big day of KMs. We enjoyed mountain roads through jungle, didn’t enjoy dust roads past mines and the trucks that come with it and we finally reached our overnight stop in Gadchiroli just as the sun set. Unfortunately we then found out there was an all India badminton competition being held there and there wasn’t a spare room in the whole city!

We stopped for dinner with The Golden Ducks and hatched a plan to push on for an hour through the night to the next major town.

Arriving at the hotel around 10pm we found ourselves guests of honour at a 1 year old’s birthday party where we were given food and time on the stage to join in with some celebrations and the obligatory selfies that come with it! 2 hours later we were able to break away and head to sleep after what had felt like a very long day!
