What connects a fallen bird from the Ramayana, the name “Lepakshi,” and a pillar that doesn’t seem to touch the ground?
According to local legend, when Ravana was taking Sita away, Jatayu, the brave divine bird, saw him and decided to fight. He battled Ravana in the sky, but was badly injured and fell to the ground.
Later, Lord Rama and Lakshmana found Jatayu. Before his final breath, Jatayu told Rama what had happened to Sita. Moved by his courage, Rama is popularly believed to have said, “Le, Pakshi!” — “Rise, bird.” This is traditionally connected with the name Lepakshi, meaning “Rise, bird.”
But the story of Lepakshi doesn’t end with the Ramayana.
Centuries later, this sacred land became home to the magnificent Lepakshi Temple, known for its beautiful Vijayanagara architecture, detailed stone carvings, and the gigantic Nandi standing outside.
And then comes the mystery…
Inside the temple is the famous Hanging Pillar—a huge stone pillar that appears to float just above the ground. It is said that you can even pass a cloth beneath it.
How did the builders create this centuries ago?
Maybe that’s the magic of Lepakshi—a place where myth, history, art, and mystery still live together in stone.
