A tribute to the incredible work of the Border Roads Organisation. 🇮🇳

I was recently in Leh, Ladakh, and honestly, I was amazed to see how BRO is building and maintaining roads at altitudes where even standing outside feels like a challenge.

Snow, freezing temperatures, steep mountains and some of the most unforgiving terrain in the country — yet these roads keep moving.

Every road here is more than just infrastructure. It’s a lifeline for the people and our armed forces.

Respect to the men and women of BRO — connecting the nation where the mountains say “impossible.” 🫡🇮🇳

February 1963 mein jab Army pahunchi, jawaan apni trench mein hi the. Hathiyaar haath se nahi chhoote the. Kisi ki peeth par goli nahi thi.
120 mein se 114 wapas nahi aaye. Us zameen pe lakdi nahi thi, toh brigade ne apna furniture deke chita banayi. Us jagah ka naam hai Ahir Dham.
Memorial 114 din mein bana. Saamne tirange ke pole ki oonchai — 114 feet.
Pangong ja rahe ho to Chushul se aage nikal jaana.

UMLING LA, LADAKH — 19,024 FT 🏔️

Umling La Pass is one of the highest motorable destinations in the world, located in the remote Changthang region of Ladakh.

If you’re planning a road trip to Umling La, route conditions and fuel planning are the two most important things to keep in mind.

📍 Main Routes to Umling La

• Photi La — 73 km | paved road | primary route
• Demchok — strategically sensitive route; access depends on the current road/security situation
• Nurbu La / Ukdungle — 88 km | rough terrain | suitable for capable off-road vehicles

⚠️ Road conditions can change quickly.
Before leaving Hanle, confirm the same-day route status with your homestay/local contacts. A closed section can significantly increase the distance and travel time.

⛽ Fuel Planning

• No reliable fuel station at Hanle
• Do not depend entirely on Nyoma for fuel
• Start with a full tank from Karu
• Carry 10–15 litres of additional fuel
• Keep enough reserve for unexpected route diversions

🏔️ Umling La at a Glance

• Elevation: 19,024 ft / 5,798 m
• Higher than Everest Base Camp (17,598 ft)
• Extremely low oxygen levels
• Temperatures can fall to around −40°C in winter
• Chisumle–Demchok road connects the region across approximately 52 km

And there’s an important update:
Umling La held the title of the world’s highest motorable road for years. In 2025, BRO developed the Mig La route at approximately 19,400 ft, surpassing Umling La in elevation. However, access to Mig La is subject to military requirements, making Umling La one of the highest iconic roads accessible to civilian travellers.

Hanle — where the darkness is protected, so the universe can be seen.

14,764 feet above sea level, in one of India’s most extraordinary high-altitude landscapes, stands the Himalayan Chandra Telescope — a 2-metre optical and infrared telescope, remotely operated from Karnataka through a dedicated satellite link.

But Hanle is much more than a telescope.

This is India’s first Dark Sky Reserve, and one of the country’s darkest astronomical sites. Here, even artificial light is carefully controlled. Homes use specially designed lights and curtains so that the night sky remains as dark as possible.

And then came the night.

I stayed there through the night, waiting for the sky to reveal itself. It wasn’t perfectly clear, but what I saw was enough to understand why people come all the way to Hanle just to look up.

Sometimes, the best view isn’t somewhere in front of you.

It’s above you. 🌌

( This is my personal advice for families , older age groups and small children travelling first time , accamlitized personal won’t face problems coming back from leh)

Yahin Himachal khatam hota hai aur Ladakh shuru. Dhabe hain, khaana mil jaata hai, washroom bhi unhi mein. Break lena ho to bilkul lo — par raat mat bitao.
Teen wajah:
• Manzil se bhi ooncha — Leh 11,500 ft, Sarchu 14,070 ft. Aap apni destination se 2,500 ft ooncha so rahe ho.
• Din mein chadhna theek, raat ko sona nahi — neend mein saans dheemi hoti hai aur oxygen aur girti hai. Isliye AMS raat ko hota hai, chalte waqt nahi.
• Leh mein hospital hai, Sarchu mein tent — yahan tabiyat bigdi to Madad ya manali ya leh ( ek chota army centre jrur hai pang mein )
✅ Pehli raat Jispa ya Keylong ruko (10,500 ft). Subah jaldi niklo, Sarchu din mein cross karo.
📶 Aur network — yahan Jio full chal raha hai. “No network” wali baat purani ho chuki hai.
