For three years, I kept this to myself.
Every time someone asked what I was building, I said, "Something that has never been attempted before." And I meant it.

I have spent the better part of my career on luxury trains including the Maharajas' Express and the Deccan Odyssey. I've discovered what India looks like from a moving window and what it sounds like at 4 am when a station platform appears out of nowhere.
I also somewhere noticed what was missing.

No train had ever traced this amazing southern arc, from the jasmine fields of Madurai to the shore temples of Mahabalipuram, from the diamond forts of Hyderabad to the carved stone kingdoms of Hampi, all the way to Mumbai; as one single journey.
So we built it.

Seventy guests.
A moving luxury train.
Historians & artisans,
a fragrance curator,
a regional chef,
and a musician
are waiting for you on your passage.

Tiffany Vos-Thane grew up walking the corridors of Rovos Rail and today runs it as the company’s COO. The best luxury, in her opinion, isn’t about five-star polish alone; it’s about the rare gift of switching off completely, of watching a continent go by without a phone in hand.

The company today employs more than 600 staff, including some 200 who run the train itself. Every carriage is restored by hand at the company’s own station in Pretoria by a team of more than 400 craftspeople who keep alive skills the rest of the world has largely let go.

With this idea at the heart of the conversation, Nidhi sits down with Tiffany in the latest Marée & Meridian feature, “A Home on Wheels.”
