How drones can help get vaccines to where they are needed most

Immunization is one the most cost-effective public health interventions, preventing 2 to 3 million lives from being lost annually from life-threatening diseases.

But more must be done to ensure people can access vaccines, particularly in India, which has one of the largest cohorts of children under 5 and pregnant women in the world.

Enter drones.

Production of the Apple iPhone 12 at a Foxconn factory in India has slumped by more than 50% because workers infected with COVID-19 have had to leave their posts, two sources told Reuters.

The Foxconn facility in the southern state of Tamil Nadu produces iPhones specifically for India, the world's No.2 smartphone market.

More than 100 Foxconn employees in the state have tested positive for COVID-19 and the company has enforced a no-entry ban at its factory in the capital of Chennai until late May, one of the sources said

The maritime traffic jam on both ends of the Suez Canal eased further on Friday, four days after the dislodging of a massive containership that had blocked the waterway, authorities said.

On Monday, salvage teams freed the skyscraper-sized Ever Given, ending a crisis that had clogged one of the world's most vital waterways and halted billions of dollars a day in maritime commerce. At the time, canal officials said that more than 420 ships had been waiting for the Panama-flagged, Japanese-owned ship to be freed so they could make the crossing.

The traffic jam on both ends of the Suez Canal eased further days after a skyscraper-sized containership had blocked the waterway.

Family and friends often call to know which of the two Covid-19 vaccines available in India is better. My advice to take whichever is easily available is met with apprehensions about adverse effects of vaccines. This is symptomatic of the past year, a year full of half-truths, false claims and often outright lies that became more viral than the virus itself. While it has been a remarkable year for science and the value it brought to society, there is little understanding of the scientific method, which relies on data and evidence.

As India approaches one year of its lockdown, I review the year gone by and attempt some cautious crystal gazing into what lies ahead.

In the over one year since the pandemic began, the response has evolved. A look at what we have learnt so far, and the challenges that remain.

The covid-19 pandemic disrupted labour & workforce markets globally. Many people were given a leave of absence or lost their jobs. Workers, who were deemed essential, continued to work in places such as hospitals, grocery stores, on garbage trucks and in warehouses.

The global lockdown led to discovery of convenience and necessity that e-commerce / online services platforms offered. This led to a huge surge in online transactions. This move to digital transactions in turn has boosted growth in delivery, transportation, and warehouse jobs.

The pandemic created an array of operational challenges for the Indian logistics sector as well, yet it remained functional for most time and facilitated the smooth movement of goods and services despite the workforce and cash flow issues.

India's Covaxin, the homegrown government-backed vaccine, has an efficacy rate of 81%, preliminary data from its phase 3 trial shows.

India's regulators gave the vaccine an emergency approval in January while the third phase of the trial was still under way, sparking scepticism and questions from experts.

Bharat Biotech, the vaccine's manufacturer, said the latest findings were "an important milestone in vaccine discovery, for science and our fight against coronavirus".

"With today's results from our phase 3 clinical trials, we have now reported data on our Covid-19 vaccine from phase 1, 2, and 3 trials involving around 27,000 participants," the firm said.

As India’s homegrown Covaxin shows 81% efficacy, here's what we know about the country’s vaccination drive.

India's Covid vaccination mock drill: planning, logistics to be in focus

Barely days away from the roll-out of a Covid-19 vaccine in India, the Centre has directed all the states and Union Territories (UTs) to conduct a dry run of the immunisation drive on Saturday to check the preparedness of the healthcare ecosystem. The drill will also test the health authorities’ abilities to manage vaccine supply, storage and logistics, including cold chain management.

96,000 vaccinators trained for world's largest immunisation exercise so far. A helpline is being started by states for any vaccine-related queries
