At this time of year, our team in Scotland are incredibly busy test digging crops as we begin to assess their yield, quality and market potential.

We test dig every crop. Depending on the size of the field, we usually take between two and five separate two-metre digs, with the samples brought back to our store for detailed assessment.

This quality check process helps ensure that the right potatoes reach the right market so our customers receive the best quality potatoes. 🥔

Thank you to everyone who came to see us at Potatoes in Practice today! 🥔

What a fantastic day, catching up with many familiar faces and meeting plenty of new ones too.

We enjoyed welcoming so many visitors to our demonstration plot and showcasing some of the varieties we are particularly excited about.

It was great to see you and we hope you enjoyed the day as much as we did! ☀️🥔

The UK team have had a busy afternoon preparing our demonstration plot for Potatoes in Practice 2026! 🌱🥔
We have 15 varieties on show, covering a wide range of markets, with some fantastic examples ready for visitors to see tomorrow.
Potatoes in Practice is always a hugely enjoyable day and, with glorious sunshine forecast, it’s shaping up to be a great one! ☀️
If you’re attending, please come along, say hello to the IPM team and take a look at the varieties we have on display.

A field of Burren being pulverised in Angus, Scotland. 🌱🥔

Pulverising is the process of mechanically cutting down the green canopy of the potato crop. This stops further tuber bulking and begins the important process of skin setting, helping the tubers develop a stronger, more durable skin ahead of harvest.
A day or two later, the crop will be treated with a desiccant to remove the remaining green growth and complete the process.
The potatoes will then remain in the soil for around four weeks, allowing the skins time to fully set before they are ready to be harvested. 🥔
Scottish grown Burren is produced for export, with Egypt being one of its key markets.

We were delighted to welcome the Executive Committee and Supervisory Board of Royal HZPC to Scotland today. ☀️ ☀️ ☀️

On what turned out to be an unusually warm day in Angus, the group visited local potato crops before spending time with the team at the IPM Potato Group office in Letham.

The glorious sunshine showcased Scotland at its very best, providing the perfect backdrop to discuss our crops, our business and the exciting opportunities ahead as part of the Royal HZPC Group.

An innovative and more sustainable approach to producing healthy mini tubers in North West Holland. 🥔🌱

These first and second generation mini tubers are protected beneath specially developed enviro-mesh. The mesh allows rainwater, air and crop protection sprays to pass through while preventing aphids from reaching the crop - significantly reducing the risk of virus transmission.

This system was introduced a few years ago following restrictions on the use of chemical insecticides and has become an effective, sustainable method of protecting young seed potato crops.

Surrounding the protected mini tubers is Sensation, a variety with a very high resistance to PVY. Planting Sensation around the crop provides an additional layer of protection, helping to minimise the risk of virus infection from the surrounding area.

The netting is installed before the crop emerges and remains in place throughout the entire growing season, ensuring continuous protection during this critical stage of production.

A great example of how innovation and variety selection are working together to produce healthier, high quality seed potatoes while reducing reliance on chemical controls.

☀️This week we visited our early trial site in Cornwall, planted in a stunning location – overlooking the beautiful Devoran Estuary near Truro.
A huge thank you to Philip Pryor and his son, Warwick, of Perranwell Station, near Truro, for kindly hosting this year's trial.
It was certainly a memorable visit, with temperatures exceeding 30°C while digging the plots! 🥵
The trial is planted within a commercial potato crop, with the field receiving 80 kg/ha of Nitrogen, providing an excellent opportunity to assess varietal performance under commercial growing conditions.
This stage marks 75 days from planting.
Our next visit will be later in July at 103 days from planting where the crop will be lifted, we hoping it is slightly cooler!!
