Some journeys lead you to a place. This one led to people.

Chris came to Ireland knowing only one thing: somewhere, a member of his family still lived in the house where his mother was born — a 400-year-old former mill that had belonged to the family for generations. He didn't know their name. He didn't know exactly where it stood.

With a little local knowledge — and a village vicar who remembered the old mill well — our guide Bobby tracked it down. And there, at the door of the very home his mother first opened her eyes in, was Chris's second cousin, still living in it after all these years.

The discoveries didn't end there. In a quiet country graveyard, the family find the resting place of their ancestors — Lizzie standing at the grave of her great-grandparents. Generations of one family, meeting across time in a single moment.

This is what an ancestry tour can become. Not a list of sights to tick off, but a door opening onto your own story.

💬 From the road with our guide Jessie — on the 12-Day South by West Explorer Tour:
"Every tour is different, because every guest is different.
Daniel has a keen interest in Irish military history — the War of Independence, ambush sites, weaponry, and the stories of those who fought during Ireland's struggle for independence. His wife, Kim, is drawn to a very different side of Ireland: wildlife, animals, and our spectacular coastal lighthouses. Fortunately, Ireland has a wonderful way of bringing those interests together.
Yesterday on the Di**le Peninsula, we stopped at the beautiful 12th-century Kilmalkedar Church, where a friendly foal was only too happy to receive some attention. Yet only a few steps away lay another connection to Ireland's revolutionary period — a grave linked to the War of Independence.
At Mizen Head Signal Station, Kim watched seals below the cliffs while Daniel explored the strategic importance of Ireland's coastal lookout stations. And earlier in the tour, the traditional farms at Muckross gave us the chance to meet Irish Wolfhounds, piglets, and all manner of heritage farm animals.
The beauty of touring Ireland is that you rarely have to choose between history and nature. One moment you're discussing an ambush from the War of Independence; the next you're admiring a lighthouse, spotting wildlife, or meeting some of Ireland's four-legged residents.
Tomorrow we head for the dramatic Loop Head Lighthouse. And if experience has taught me anything, we'll probably find another fascinating piece of revolutionary history somewhere along the way.
That's one of the joys of exploring Ireland: every road has a story, and every story leads somewhere unexpected."

There's a particular kind of magic in an Irish sunset by the sea. 🌅
The sky turns to rose and amber, the Atlantic glows, and for a few quiet minutes the beach belongs to no one and everyone all at once

Tag someone you'd love to share this view with. 💛

A big thank you to our guide Bobby for capturing this one!

Our guest arrived in Ireland with questions. He left with answers he hadn't even thought to ask for.

Working with genealogy expert Claire Bradley from CB Genealogy , they discovered relatives he never knew existed in Claremorris, County Mayo. And in Di**le, the names of his ancestors began appearing in places he was already falling in love with.

There's something quietly extraordinary about standing on land your family once called home. About realising that the pull you felt towards Ireland was never just curiosity, it was something much older than that.

We feel honoured to be part of moments like these. 🤍☘️

We are very saddened to hear of the recent passing of Brian Sands. We worked with Brian since the founding of Little Gem and not only was he a wonderful, knowledgeable guide in his hometown Belfast but more importantly he was a top, top guy who always came with big positive energy and a very very kind soul. He will be hugely missed. RIP Sandsy

Our tour planner Niamh is back with another weekend adventure, and this time she headed to the Hill of Tara, one of Ireland's most sacred ancient sites, sitting at the heart of the Boyne Valley in County Meath.

"The first thing that strikes you about the Hill of Tara is how understated it is. No big visitors centre, no admission fee. You meet lots of local families out with children, walking their dogs around the periphery of this amazing site. It would be easy to forget that it was once considered an entry point to the otherworld, a significant place for Kings and Gods alike. Similar to Uisneach, it is easy to imagine the ancient procession paths. What a privilege it is for us to have a place of such incredible cultural significance on our doorsteps for locals to enjoy every day.

My advice to anyone planning a visit would be to read up before you arrive so you can understand the significance of the site. Mythical Ireland mythicalireland.com has a wonderful article available online which guides you through each chapter of the fascinating story of the Hill of Tara. If you do visit, remember that it is a sacred site and a burial place for many."

The Hill of Tara has been a place of ceremony and power since Neolithic times, over 5,000 years ago. It sits at the centre of Ireland's Ancient East, surrounded by some of the most significant prehistoric monuments in Europe, including Newgrange, Knowth, and the passage tombs of the Boyne Valley.

On our Meet the Local Tour, you have the opportunity to meet Anthony, curator of mythicalireland.com to learn more about the Boyne Valley and ancient Irish culture.

For anyone planning a trip to Ireland, the Boyne Valley is one of those regions that rewards slowing down and spending time.

Our guests found the Cliffs of Moher like this yesterday 🌫️🌊

A completely transformed landscape, with the cliffs rising above a sea of fog that covered the entire base.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Review: "We found the pot of gold in Ireland" ☘️

A huge thank you, Dan and Earlene, for this beautiful review 🤍 Reading messages like this truly means the world to us.

"Little Gem Tours provided a once in a lifetime trip to Ireland. Niamh was very helpful as we planned the trip, securing lodging and preparing the itinerary. Bobby was the icing on the cake. He hosted our group on the tour. If there are Leprechauns, Bobby fits the bill. He was very knowledgeable, witty and a bit of a cracker making the trip around Ireland a roaring party. When pointing out key points or explaining historic events he would say 'and we have a song in Ireland about that'. He was kind and attentive to our needs. Niamh and Bobby are certainly the best ambassadors for Ireland. We certainly found the pot of gold in Ireland."

Great job, Niamh and Bobby 🤍 Always creating memorable experiences and sharing the magic of Ireland in the most special way.
