1966: Col Albert R. Howarth demonstrated exemplary courage and airmanship under the most hazardous conditions of darkness and intense enemy fire while participating in a SEA combat mission. He received the Mackay Trophy for his intrepidity.
The A-26 Invader had become well established as a major truck killer on the Ho Chi Minh Trail and its call sign Ni**od was well known in the skies over Laos. Its long endurance, heavy ordnance load and slow speed were useful characteristics for the patient stalking of traffic on the myriad of roads and trails that wound their way through Laos towards South Vietnam. However, the Invader was vulnerable to ground fire. Lt Col Howarthโ€™s aircraft was hit by automatic weapons fire during a dusk mission near Ban Kapay. One of the aircraftโ€™s engines caught fire but Lt Col Howarth kept the aircraft in the air and managed to fly some 20 miles to the west before the crew were forced to abandon the Invader. All the crew were picked up safely around midnight by one of Udornโ€™s HH-3Es. Lt Col Howarth was awarded the Mackay Trophy for his outstanding airmanship and courage displayed during this mission.

Kevin: Hi, Iโ€™m Kevin! Iโ€™m a 17 year old student and pilot from Ireland and I have had a massive interest in aviation during the Vietnam War from a young age. I grew up watching โ€œDogfightsโ€ on TV so my childhood was filled with fighter tactics and the roar of J79 engines. I set this group up for people to share their love of aviation during the war and it is a group for people of all nationalities. North Vietnamese aircraft and aviators are just as welcome as their counterparts. I sincerely welcome you to the VWA Family.
