Some candid images of the litter that ended up in the River Liffey after Storm Babet. The vast majority of this was cleared, sorted and sent for disposal or recycling by the Liffey Sweeper team before it could become a hazard or be washed out to sea.

Visit Poolbeg Yacht and Boat Club on Culture Night to learn about a new public art project ‘Liffey Love’ by artist Rhona Byrne, commissioned by Dublin City Council. Come on a journey up the River Liffey on The Liffey Ferry, the oldest ferry in Ireland, with artist Rhona Byrne and Jimmy Murray of the Irish Nautical Trust. Rhona is working with Irish Nautical Trust on the Liffey Sweeper to collect plastic waste from the River Liffey and repurposing it to create a social sculpture in the form of love seats placed on the North Campshires of the River in early 2024. Liffey Love is an art project that considers connection and what it means to love our city, rethink materials of everyday life and embrace sustainable circular practices to nurture a sense of collective civic engagement. Come along to hear about the origins and processes of this exciting art project.

In an attempt to prevent the accumulation of debris within the River Liffey and to stop litter from reaching Dublin Bay and the Irish Sea, the Irish Nautical Trust launched the “ Sweeper”, as part of their River Liffey Cleaning Project, in April 2021.

Fitted with a deep frontal cage, the Liffey Sweeper is a river cleaning vessel designed to collect floating debris, such as plastic, cans and glass bottles from the River Liffey and surrounding areas, including Dublin Port. Once this vessel removes waste from the water, the debris can be separated and sorted into recyclable and non-recyclable waste, the latter being removed for treatment and disposal.
