Ireland's geographical position must be recognised when EU transport and climate policies are developed.

That’s the message from Irish MEP, Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, who called on the European Commission to recognise the unique challenges facing Ireland, Malta and Cyprus as island Member States.

Ireland has no alternative to the sea crossings that connect us to the rest of the EU, and with the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) adding costs to maritime transport, there are concerns about the impact on Irish hauliers, businesses and ultimately consumers.

Ireland's geographical circumstances must be considered when developing European transport policy. The transition towards cleaner transport is important, but it must also recognise the practical realities of operating from an island.

The proposed amendments would temporarily exempt certain sea journeys from ETS obligations until the end of 2040, alongside investment in cleaner maritime technologies.

We welcome this contribution to the debate and the continued focus on ensuring Ireland's haulage sector can compete fairly within the European Single Market.

We welcome the measures announced in Budget 2027, but there is still more to be done to support Ireland’s haulage sector.

Several measures we have been campaigning for have been included:
- The continuation of the diesel rebate scheme until the end of 2026 with continued review,
- An additional two months of the Road Transporters Support Scheme to be paid before Christmas,
- The continuation of fuel excise reductions into Spring 2027.

These are much-needed measures that will provide some breathing space for hauliers and help control costs for businesses and consumers across Ireland.

We are disappointed, however, that our proposals for targeted biofuel subsidies were not included.

Our President, Ger Hyland, has spoken directly with Minister Darragh O’Brien, who has committed to working with our sector over the next 12 months to develop a plan to incentivise biofuels.

“This budget gives hauliers something to work with, but not everything we had asked for. There are some welcome measures, and we recognise the steps the Government has taken.

"We see this as a step in the right direction rather than the final destination.

"We will continue to make the case for the measures needed to support a competitive, sustainable and resilient Irish road haulage sector - including a move to biofuels to decarbonise our industry”

If you're working through the HGV testing process, here's a tip that could save you some time.

You may think that you must pass your HGV driving test before you book your Walk Around Test, which can add considerable waiting time to the process.

The good news is that you don't have to wait.

You can book your HGV driving test and Walk Around Test at the same time and (subject to availability) arrange to complete both on the same day.

It could save you valuable time and help you complete the testing process more efficiently.

One important point: you must have completed your CPC theory test and case study test before applying for a Walk Around Test.

Finding a vehicle defect is only useful if the right person knows about it.

A good defect-reporting system creates a clear route from the person who spots the problem to the person responsible for deciding what happens next.

Under CVRT guidance, defects found during a walkaround should be recorded, including what the defect is and when it was discovered.

Any reported defects must then be followed up, with the corrective action recorded in the vehicle's maintenance record.

A defect report is an important part of the information chain that helps keep vehicles roadworthy.

Irish hauliers cannot sustain current fuel prices.

That was the message from IRHA President Ger Hyland this week as he met with Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris to discuss the pressures facing operators across the country.

Fuel is a fundamental operating cost for every haulier, and the current increases are putting significant pressure on businesses responsible for keeping Ireland’s goods and supply chains moving.

Following the meeting, Ger said:

“The budget isn’t sorted yet. It’s a work in progress, and we will be keeping the pressure on between now and the budget for proper supports for this industry.”

The IRHA will continue engaging directly with Government to ensure the realities facing Irish road hauliers are understood and represented as Budget 2027 approaches

We will continue making the case for practical measures that support a sustainable and viable Irish haulage industry.

Being an independent operator doesn't mean you have to face every challenge alone.

Independents have to balance getting the job done with managing customers, vehicle, costs, compliance... the list goes on.

Independence is something to be proud of, but there is real strength in having access to people who understand the industry and the challenges that come with it.

Our recent Annual Conference proved the value of ongoing connection with policy makers.

The ministers who joined us over the weekend took time to speak to delegates, listen to members and engaged in serious conversation with the IRHA team.

Each of them left the conference with a clearer understanding of the challenges our sector faces on a daily basis - and we were encouraged by their positive words and support for our vital industry.
