LAST CHANCE to save a Sanos S14: two Sanoses have been standing in a forest near Rijeka, on private property, for over 20 years. You can see their current condition in the photos below. One of the buses has no engine, while the other is mostly intact. They were built in 1979 and operated for Autotrolej until 2005.

We are in contact with the owner, who has decided to offer them for sale in the hope that someone interested in restoring them will come forward. The asking price is 12 thousand euros. Both are exposed to the elements, and it would take a lot of effort to return one to service, but it is possible!

As far as we know, there are no S14s in running condition anywhere, and only a few wrecks can still be found here and there. This may be the last chance to save a bus of this model. Contact us if you are interested and we will connect you with the owner.

🎞 Beograd, sredina 80-ih

So far, we have mostly shown you ones from the 1990s, but there are also older photos by the late Zdravko Horvat! Here is one of a Belgrade vehicle fair from around 1984. A seemingly typical lineup of the FFB group of the time: three Sanoses (S315, S310?) and one Dubrava (D1420). However, the Sanos second from right is quite special: it is an S415 with a Mercedes-Benz front grille and single-leaf doors that open inwards. This is the only known photo of such a model so far. Sanos would put the S415.5, a model of the same sort with a slightly different bodywork, into series production only in the late 80s. We do not have any details about the prototype series seen at the fair.

Linija P**a – Cere godine 1994.!

The livery made famous to us by various Austrian buses (a darker yellow with a red stripe down the side) was created when the Austrian post and railways (Postbus and ÖBB) joined forces to form the Bundesbus in 1988. Many buses were then repainted in that new scheme, but some still retained their original appearance and reached Croatia in that state, such as this Gräf & Stift GSL 240/60 in the old Postbus scheme. It was produced in 1978 and operated for P**apromet until 2001. There it had fleet number 169 – as you can (not) see, the nine is missing, but the mailbox is still there! There is also no shortage of passengers on the P**a – Cere route, as seen in 1994. A list of P**apromet's historic fleet is available here: https://autobusi.org/forum/index.php?topic=4905.msg226167

The name Drögmöller is synonymous with high-quality buses for many. The Heilbronn-based manufacturer introduced the Comet series in 1977, known for its “Theaterbestuhlung” concept, with “theater” seats set diagonally parallel to the side windows, providing excellent visibility for all passengers. At the time, Drögmöller produced fewer than 100 buses per year, and from 1965 until its Heilbronn plant closed in 2005 it built around 3,100 buses. Many of them had the E designation (“Eigenbau” – own construction) for their own chassis, including this E330 Comet from 1986, the only one of its kind in Croatia and one of nine in the country built before Volvo took over production in 1995. It drove for AP Sisak up to 2015.

Today, we're trying to fill in some gaps in data that Zdravko Horvat wrote down around 1998 with these photos. At that time, these two MANs SL 200s were registered: both at Autoturist Samobor, both with fleet number 258. However, it seems that the first bus, painted in colours previously used by Hertz, which previously operated for Bišćan d.o.o. and ZET ( #455), and originally for Neunkircher Verkehrs, was not kept. Does anyone know what happened to that MAN, was it sold to somewhere? Where did the yellow one come from, was it also from ZET? Maybe the drivers who follow us remember :)

This Dubrava D14, more precisely D1420 M1-R14 (length 11.3 m, Famos 200 hp engine and conventional windows) was the 1100th bus on the D14 chassis made by Tvornica autobusa Zagreb. It was originally part of the fleet of Zagorjetrans from Veliko Trgovišće, and in the photo we see it in Zabok whilst owned by Presečki bus. It was completed in 1988 or 1989, when TAZ was already well advanced with the export of D14s to England and was starting production of Transliners for Neoplan. However, immediately after the change of government in the spring of 1990, TAZ was declared bankrupt, privatized and finally shut down by the end of the 1990s.

In 1989, TAM introduced a new high-floor model, the 331 A 119 VT. Photographed on display at the Belgrade Fair in 1991 before it was put into service, this TAM ( #436) was the only grey 331 in ATP Vojvodina, which bought five. All of them were used until the company was privatized, and this one remained in the garage even after ATP was shut down in 2009. Incidentally, this controversial privatization case, according to later investigations, was determined to be the only one in Serbia in which the investor, and not the state, was considered the injured party.

Velik kapacitet, udobnost i modernost nisu ispunili potencijal.

When we showed you a photo of ZET's Ikarus last week, many of you asked if we remembered the white articulated TAMs from the 1990s. So, here is a never-before-seen photo of precisely such a TAM 260 A 180 M on line 109 Črnomerec – Dugave. Already visibly rusted, it was scrapped in 1997 at just eight years old. This was the first domestic articulated bus model with a combination of an engine behind the rear axle and automatic transmission. It was supposed to be the forerunner of a new era, but it came too early for the factory, the operators and everyone involved. Due to its heavy body, poor brakes, insufficent heating, instability, unreliability and many other problems, the model was remembered as a failure. The shortcomings were slowly being taken care of in newer series, but then the war brought an end to production. There were about 20 of them in Croatia (10 in ZET: 7 white and 3 white-blue), but only one lived to see the year 2000 in service (fleet no. 1 at Promet Split, which, by the way, broke its joint around that time). The large capacity, comfort and modernity did not live up to their potential.

Not much has changed at the Split bus station since this photo taken in autumn 2003: the platforms and pillars, even the signs, are the same. The buses, however, are not. The Eurobus AV 120 in the foreground, waiting to depart on the Split – Dubrovnik line, was almost brand new. From the last series, built in Mostar, it was first registered on January 3, 2001 by Croatiaturist, with its distinctive burgundy color and Zagreb license plates. However, Croatiaturist was already on the way out by then, and four of its new Eurobuses were soon seized by a leasing company. The new home for most of them became AP Varaždin, which assigned them to various domestic lines.

Autotrans's TAM #755 before reaching the port of Jablanac, where ferries to the island of Rab docked until 2012. The model 260 A 120 T from Avtomontaža, the first with the 260 designation, appeared on the market in 1984. It was the successor to the 230 A 12 (which was built on a Magirus chassis) and featured a new 256 hp V8 engine paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Simply put, it was a lengthened and, more importantly, heightened (to 3.15 m) version of the 190 A 11 T. It could accommodate 49 to 53 passengers, making it a competitor to the TAZ and Sanos. Autotrans had about 15 of them, and in Croatia there were about 100: Čazmatrans, ATP Šibenik, AP Varaždin, Croatiatrans Zlatar, Libertas-Dubrovnik, ZET, Brioni, etc.
