I've missed and almost missed flights from getting lost in the employee dining areas, needing to check luggage when I didn't have extra luggage to check, needing to pay for luggage I didn't have money to pay for, looking for people who speak English, falling asleep at the gate (but that doesn't really apply here, does it... 😜)

GeckoTrek It! Travel Tip: Ask people on the street if anyone knows of places to stay. You never know who's aunt has an open room or which bungalow was just renovated for guests.

What a treat this place was... a freshly finished stilted hut overlooking the river in jungly Belize. After talking with the manager, she was more than thrilled to make me a local dinner rather than me buying it elsewhere. Such a treat!

The coldest weather I'd ever been in my life was in Northern China. Friends there taught me how to layer with special neoprene-like long underwear that made -29.3 C (-20.74 F) feel like a walk on the beach on Maui. And everyone was outside walking like they were on the beach on Maui.

GeckoTrek It! Travel Tip: Look for a place to stay when you get there. If you're not on a crazy tight schedule and heading to a hole-in-the-wall locale, walk around when you get there. You'll never know what a beauty you'll find.

This was one of the greatest treats -- a seaside retreat for an unbelievable gorgeous day of travel planning in Belize. And for pennies compared to the resorts that were found online.

A friend told us about a two-story snow hill that everyone loved speeding down when the streets were cleared. I'm sure the smiling kids with pieces of cardboard and shrieks of joy would have given it away, too. Just one block off the main street... Sidestreets are the way to a GeckoTrek!

This is a fantastic hole-in-the wall "calendar" New Year's celebrations in the freezing north of China. We embraced it like the locals and saw ice do things we never knew possible.

GeckoTrek It! Travel Tip: Take pictures of EVERYTHING to remember where you're going! Especially where you're staying when every door looks the same. When you get lost, you can ask people where something is, even if you don't speak their language.

Here, in Skyros, Greece, we took this picture to remember exactly which door was ours in the midst of the winding alleys of the gorgeous Grecian chora.
