PANAFEST 2027: 25 July — 3 August.

It runs every two years, and 2027 closes on Emancipation Day, 1 August, when the whole festival moves down to Cape Coast and Elmina for the Reverential Night vigil and the procession back to the castles.

That is the emotional centre of the entire programme. It falls squarely inside our ten days.

Theme this cycle: "Ensuring the African Kinship — Our Essence, Our Well-being, Our Prosperity."

Here is the part people learn the hard way: Cape Coast has limited beds, and numbers swell every cycle. The groups who travel well are the ones who booked eleven months out.

40 metres up, on a rope bridge, in the mist, before the forest wakes up.

Kakum's canopy walkway is seven bridges strung between giant trees. Go at dawn and you get it almost to yourself — the guides will take you before the day crowd arrives, and the mist is still sitting in the canopy.

It is also, for a lot of people, the moment the trip stops being heavy. You spend the morning at Cape Coast Castle and the afternoon suspended over a rainforest, and Ghana gives you both in the same day.

That's the thing about this country. It doesn't ask you to choose.

Every kente pattern has a name. And a meaning. And rules about who is allowed to wear it.

In Bonwire, the weavers will tell you which cloth was made for a king, which one is for a funeral, and which one you have no business buying as a souvenir.

Most visitors get shown a loom for ten minutes and buy a strip. On our Ashanti days you sit with a master weaver long enough to understand what you're actually looking at — then go on to Manhyia Palace and the Akwasidae if the calendar lines up.

If your family is Gullah or Geechee, your ancestors probably didn't leave from Ghana.

They left from here.

South Carolina rice planters went looking for captives from the Rice Coast specifically — because they already knew how to grow rice. Bunce Island was the supplier.

An hour up the Sierra Leone River, the fort is still standing in the bush. The cells. The graves. Almost nobody brings groups here.

Some doors were built so people would never come back through them.

At Elmina, the exit was called the Door of No Return. Millions walked out. Almost none walked back in.

But this family did. Together. On their own terms. Holding hands on the same stones their ancestors crossed in chains.
