Point of View:
"Flipping Through Life's Chapters"

Life can be a rollercoaster of emotions – a mix that's hard to put into words. I've felt a blend of hope, happiness, fun, despair, sadness, and discouragement, along with countless other emotions that words fail to capture. But amidst it all, the fear of the unknown weighs heaviest on me.

Sometimes, I wish life were just a page in a book – something I could simply flip over and move on. But it seems more like an entire chapter, filled with similar uncertainties. And even when one chapter ends, another begins, just as unpredictable as the last.

So, what do I do? Giving up is not an option. Until that final page is turned, I will press on with unwavering belief. I will face every challenge, conquer every obstacle, and wage war against every doubt. And most importantly, I will never give up.

Because at the end of the day, _there's always light at the end of the tunnel._ Even if the light I see is that of an oncoming train, I know it will not be the last light I ever see. And soon, that long-awaited, exciting chapter will begin.

Happy International Women's Day!"

Every year, humanity generates between 2.1 billion and 2.3 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste.

Some 2.7 billion people lack access to waste collection, 2 billion of whom live in rural areas. Waste pollution significantly threatens human well-being, economic prosperity, and the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution.

Without urgent action, annual municipal solid waste generation will hit 3.8 billion tonnes by 2050.

From the most remote depths of the ocean to the deepest section of the lung, microplastics appear to have invaded every bit of our lives, including our bodies.

More than 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic has been produced by humans since the 1950s, 79% of which has ended up in landfill and the natural environment. Since then, microplastics have been found in soil, air, and plant and animal life in all corners of our planet.

As for humans, in recent years, research has shown that these microscopic particles can be found in our organs, our bloodstream, and the placentas of pregnant women.

Hundreds of environmental campaigners march in the capital on Saturday demanding drastic curbs on plastic production, ahead of a meeting in the city to negotiate a global plastics treaty.

Marchers called for the talks to focus on cutting the amount of plastic produced and waved placards reading "Plastic crisis = climate crisis" and "End multigenerational exposure".

Global production has more than doubled since the start of the century, but less than 10 per cent of plastic waste is currently recycled.

also contributes to global , accounting for 3.4 per cent of global emissions in 2019, according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

"Plastic pollution is affecting everyone all along the value chain from the moment we extract oil gas and coal to make plastic, to the moment we export waste to third countries, to having it ending up being burnt or being in dump sites,” said Delphine Levi Alvares, Global Petrochemical Lead at Break Free from Plastic.

Representatives from 175 nations meet in Nairobi from Monday to negotiate for the first time what concrete measures should be included in a binding global treaty to end plastic pollution.

Bottles and shopping bags choke waterways while tiny pieces of microplastics show up in food and throughout the bodies of animals and humans.

Plastic also contributes to global warming, accounting for 3.4 percent of global emissions in 2019, according to the OECD.

Despite growing awareness of the problem, the amount of new plastic being made is exploding: annual production is on track to triple within four decades, though less than 10 percent is recycled.

Plastic waste is “spiralling out of control” across Africa, where it is growing faster than any other region, new analysis has shown.

If the trend continues unabated, the region is projected to end up with 116m tonnes of plastic waste annually by 2060, six times more than the 18m tonnes of waste produced in 2019.

The main driver of rising plastic consumption in sub-Saharan Africa, where 70% of the population is under 30, is demand for vehicles and other products amid rising income and population growth.

The size of Africa's food and agriculture market is expected to reach $1 trillion by 2030, with the new millionaires and billionaires coming from the food and agriculture industry rather than the oil and gas sector.
It's time for Africa to fill airplanes and ships with processed and value-added foods and agricultural commodities for trade around the world,” Dr. Adesina stated.
