Whitstable's tourism is booming and the current traffic-flow system, designed for Victorian carts & horses, just can't cope. This non-political, community-led group campaigns for a sustainable traffic management system that has safety and posterity in mind; we want to make our town a safer one for everyone and a more pleasant experiences for all our many, welcome, visitors. We firmly believe that

this is not an issue over which councillors can just bury their heads in the sand. It is embarrassing that this issue - discussed for over 45 years - has not been actioned. Whitstable's tourist footfall has increased over 300% in the last five years and our councillors have not acted. Children, dogs and often adults just stray in front of cars because the sheer amount of people on the pavements is too many. The pavements are too narrow for some wheelchairs and prams; when scaffolding is put up (as it often is, to repaint the beautiful, heritage buildings), then prams and wheelchairs are forced on the roads. We - at 1Way4Whit are not content with sitting waiting for an accident to happen before we call for action; we call for action now.

1Way4Whit knows that there are many difficulties with the introduction of a one-way system & whilst we primarily believe for this to be, certainly in the long term, the ultimate goal for the future safety, beauty and charm of the town to be retained, we are open to other suggestions. We believe all obstacles are surmountable; we want to building a Whitstable that our children can be proud.

1Way4Whit calls for a non-partisan investigation to be run into the viability of a strong and sustainable one-way system, which takes into account the impact on Cromwell Road - a viable one-way system will HAVE to address this issue. We also want KCC to act immediately. We also call for immediate action on the mis-use of parking in the High Street & believe that the viability of removing or severely restricting loading bay hours in the High Street should be investigated. We think there could be merits in the idea of a Park and Ride with shuttle bus system - this too deserves further exploration.

1Way4Whit also calls for a public meeting, chaired by an academic or media organisation to let all parties and ideas be exchanged in a fruitful, collaborative and fowards-thinking way. We call on our councillors to listen to this community group and to take on-board the suggestions presented. We call on both Canterbury City Council and Kent County Council to act now.

On the Bank Holiday weekend, this is your top ten:

3. Whitstable Harbour Board is funding the Amplified Youth Stage at this years Whitstable Oyster Festival. If you have a musical 14-19 year old who wants to play on the Saturday at Dead Man's Corner email [email protected] asap with a little about yourself and link to 90 seconds of performance
4. Canterbury City Council is also supporting the Blessing of the Beasts on the 12th. Come join a free kids workshop on the 4th September, 10-5pm at the Coach and Horses.
5. The museum is free on the 12-14 and 18-21st September as part of the Heritage Open Days. St Johns Swalecliffe also have a exhibition of black and white photos of town on the 12-13th.
6. Flu and COVID Vacinations will be running at Whitstable Medical Practice every Saturday during October and November. Booking opens on the 1st September for pregnant women and 2-3year olds. Other eligible groups will get a text invite to book from mid September.
7. The Whitstable Artist and Makers Trail is looking for participants for its November Trail. Email [email protected] by the 14th September if you are interested
8. Kent Association for the Blind is looking for someone to help run their Whitstable and Tankerton Blind Club which meets twice a month. Call 01227 763 366.
9. The Waterloo Centre is running cream teas tomorrow. They are also running stalls on the 18th September raising money for MacMillan Cancer Research
10. Social Enterprise Kent is running a Big Writing Challenge on the back of the Summer Reading Challenge at Whitstable Library Kids are encouraged to write 500 words - a story, poeam or comic strip on the 'Power of Kindnesss'.

Wonderful Emergency Services Day at Whitstable Harbour yesterday. Here’s your top ten:
1. Revival need a little help organising their community day on Cornwallis Circle on the 5th. If you can donate a prize for the tombola or barrel of booze please drop something into Ross at the Offy, Erin at Gatefield Sounds or the cafe themselves.

3. Next weekend is Boing, a firm family favourite at the University of Kent
4. If you are in town this week pop into the Waterloo Centre to see the new tapestry proudly on show. The tapestries, initially made by the Oyster sewers at the Umbrella depict the history of town in sections. Local resident June has made one for 2000-2025
5. Radfall Road is closed up until the 26th for water repair works (update it’s reopened)
6. If you have kids going to school by bus remember that the first week of September 1st-11th is free for all kids using Stagecoach, allowing them to pick up their bus passes at school
7. If you have a loved one struggling with their sight, Kent Association for the Blind is running its next pop up at Chestfield Medical Centre, 10-3 on the 18th September

Below is the latest
update regarding water supplies in the Herne Bay, Whitstable and Canterbury areas this morning.

Herne
Bay

Supplies were restored
to 7,400 customers in Herne Bay overnight. Our teams have worked hard to increase the levels in the storage tanks while the demand for water reduced overnight.

While the storage
levels in our tanks have increased, they’re still lower than we would normally start the day with, therefore we’re still encouraging customers to be mindful of their water use.

Drinking water supplies
may become intermittent again later today.

To help keep as
many properties supplied as possible, water is currently being tankered directly into the storage tanks to replenish levels.

We’re truly sorry
for the service received over the past few days, this is not the service you deserve.

Whitstable

Properties in the
Wraik Hill area of Whitstable continue to have their drinking water supplies, as drinking water levels in the storage tank which supplies the area have increased overnight. While the levels in the storage tank have improved, we still need customers to use
water cautiously to keep the supplies stable.

Rough
Common and Blean

All 670 properties
in the Rough Common and Blean area have had their supplies restored this morning.

The drinking water
storage tanks in this area still remain low, and we are asking our customers to use water wisely.

Latest Update from South East Water 17th August 9.00am

Good morning,

Below is the latest
on the water supply issues in the Herne Bay and Whitstable area this morning.

Herne
Bay

All customers in
the Herne Bay area impacted by water supply issues in the town yesterday had their supplies restored overnight, however there is a risk customers will lose drinking water supplies again this morning.

This is because
the water level within our drinking water storage tank which supplies the town remains critically low. We’re therefore urging all customers to continue using water for essential uses only today.

Whitstable

There are currently
up to 200 properties with low pressure or no water in the Wraik Hill area following power issues overnight. Supplies to these properties are due to be restored this morning.

We are continuing
to use our tanker fleet to inject water directly into the pipeline network in the Radfall area. This is because our boosters are unable to run currently due to the low levels in our drinking water storage tanks.

We know this level
of service is unacceptable and we’re committed to trying to resolve the issues as soon as possible.

Rough
Common and Blean

We’re aware of an
issue in the Rough Common and Blean area this morning, we are looking into this now and will provide further information as soon as we have it.

Latest update from SEW Sunday 16th 11.50am sent to councillors

Good morning,

With the prolonged
spell of hot and dry weather across Kent continuing, demand for drinking water remains high and levels in our drinking water storage tanks in the Herne Bay and Whitstable areas are still low today (Sunday, 16 August).

What’s
the latest?

Last night (Saturday,
15 August) the levels in our drinking water storage tanks in this area dropped due to high demand and this impacted our ability to pump drinking water to our customers. As a result, up to 3,000 customers were without water between 8pm and 11pm.

Customer supplies
returned overnight, however separately this morning (Sunday, 16 August), we experienced a technical issue at our water treatment works in the area.

As a result, up to
7,000 customers may currently be experiencing low pressure, intermittent supply or no water.

We have a technician
on site to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and the pumps are now running again, although it will take some time to recharge the network and restore supplies to all affected properties.

However, the high
demand for drinking water means there remains an ongoing risk of further supply interruptions as levels in the local drinking water storage tanks are still critically low.

What
are we doing?

We are delivering
bottled water to customers on our Priority Services Register in the affected areas.

Separately, we have
been using our tanker fleet to inject water directly into our network locally in Radfall, as our boosters are unable to run currently due to the low levels in our drinking water storage tanks.

As we have previously
stated, there are times when the tankers will need to be changed over, which will impact supplies for a short period.

This will be between
5pm and 7pm daily, during which time, customers in the Radfall area may experience intermittent supplies. We are sorry for this and we will work as quickly as possible to minimise disruption.

We are continuing
to monitor the situation closely and will provide further information via our website if anything changes.

Latest update from SEW on current interruptions to water supply. 10.40pm 15th August

Good evening,

I am writing to you
today (Saturday, 15 August) to inform you of a water supply issue in Herne Bay and surrounding areas
this evening
impacting around 7,000 properties.

Due to the prolonged
period of hot and dry weather, water levels in our local drinking water storage tank are running extremely low and this has impacted our ability to pump fresh drinking water to our customers.

We know that disruption
to our customers' drinking water supply is frustrating, especially during hot weather.

What
are we doing?

We have been changing
the way that water moves around our system in order to try and minimise the impact of these outages.

We are doing everything
we can to try and recharge the levels in the storage tank overnight that feeds the area to try and make sure our customers wake up to a supply of drinking water.

We will be delivering
bottled water to all of our vulnerable customers on our Priority Services Register in the area tomorrow.

We’re supporting
critical sites in the area such as care homes and medical centres with deliveries of bottled water or utilising our tankers.

We will open bottled
water stations and community hubs in the local area if the supply issues continue into tomorrow.

We’re continuing
to ask customers to use water for essential purposes only: drinking,
cooking and hygiene.

1. The £2 price cap on bus journeys returns for kids this month. Kent County Council have returned it for adults on some routes but none near us. The cap returns for everyone in January
