An eco-port which is navigable from the 'Bar' across the harbour's mouth all the way up to Kingsbridge. The harbour and estuary provides a naturally beautiful safe haven for a wide range of recreational and leisure activities including dinghy and yawl sailing, yachting, canoeing, stand-up paddle-boarding, bathing and more. It also accommodates a small but active shell-fishing fleet which exports S

alcombe crab world-wide. It offers residents and visitors alike a very friendly and warm welcome and offers a range of marine services.

Disappointing start to the morning today. This is our commercial fish quay pontoon, a restricted access area indicated by signage for use only by commercial fisherman and harbour staff.
One of our fisherman found the pontoon in this state whilst on his way out to sea this morning, with leisure crab lines, nets and buckets littered everywhere.
We love people enjoying the harbour and its facilities, but this isn’t acceptable. We please ask everyone who uses or visits the harbour to respect its use, considering how you interact with it and the state you leave it in.

LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS NO 02 OF 2026
RACING DINGHY FREE FAIRWAY

To reduce the risk of collision within Salcombe Harbour during dinghy racing, a Racing Dinghy Free Fairway will be implemented as detailed below. Generally, this will be used to facilitate Saturday afternoon race starts and those within the August Regatta programmes but may be used whenever an event requires vessel traffic management:

1. The Harbour Authority will establish a temporary fairway along the western shore of the harbour during dinghy racing. This temporary fairway is for vessels entering and leaving the harbour (yellow arrow). Dinghies involved in racing must keep clear of this fairway but will potentially block the remaining width of the channel on the start line (orange line).

2. The fairway’s limits will be 50º14’.01 N 003º46’.02 W to 50º14’.2 N 003º45’.8 W and its northern to southern limits marked by yellow buoys with X top mark.

3. The Harbour Authority will broadcast the fairway’s establishment on VHF #14 and a yellow flashing light will illuminate on each side of the Salcombe Yacht Club watch house (50º14’.12N 003º46’.52W).

4. The racing dinghy free fairway will be established from at least five minutes before the start of the first race start until at least five minutes after the start of the last race, but may be kept in force for longer if traffic density dictates.

5. The racing dinghy free fairway will not be established two hours either side of low water when the predicted tidal height at low water is less than 1m. On such occasions when the harbour is busy and there are a large number of dinghies racing, Salcombe Yacht Club will either reschedule the race start or use a committee boat start.

6. The racing dinghy free fairway will not be shortened.

Vacancy: Harbour Board Member

South Hams District Council, the statutory Harbour Authority for the Salcombe Harbour-Kingsbridge Estuary, is seeking applications from members of the public to serve on its Harbour Board.

Set in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK the municipal port of Salcombe is a traditional leisure and fishing port hosting internationally recognised sailing regattas and exporting exceptional quality shellfish around the world. The Harbour has a rich and diverse natural and historic heritage and is recognised as a National Landscape, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and a Local Nature Reserve.

If you have the commitment, passion and enthusiasm to help provide strategic oversight, good governance and stewardship to support harbour safety, financial and environmental sustainability, and the long term interests of harbour users and the local community, please contact us for more information. Applicants should have relevant experience at a senior or professional level and an interest in the harbour. Experience in areas such as maritime activities, governance, finance, environmental management, or public service would be beneficial, though maritime experience is not essential.

The Harbour Board comprises of four elected councillors and six co-opted independent members of the public and meets six times a year during working hours - normally on a Monday afternoon. Although the post is not paid, reasonable travel expenses can be reimbursed. Board appointments ordinarily last for three years but may be extended by mutual agreement. To apply for the position, or for an informal discussion, please contact the Harbour Master by phone on 01548 843791, or email [email protected]

The closing date for applications is Friday 15th May 2026, with interviews taking place on Tuesday 26th May 2026. https://www.salcombeharbour.co.uk/jobs
