Many a happy hour whiled away in the old nissen hut airport terminal at Stansted Airport in the 1950s and 60s by myself, my big brother Gezz and our mates. The local ladies who worked in the coffee shop were always very nice to us 'geeky' aircraft spotters and even more so when I was a cadet in the Air Training Corps (ATC), hanging about to cadge flights with the Civil Aviation Authority Flying Unit (CAAFU) in one of their De Havilland Doves or a Hunting Princes.

British United's Bristol Britannias used to fly British troops and their families on government charter contracts from Stansted to a number of countries in the 1960s.... PS the aircraft was known as the 'Whispering Giant'.

Vic Heath during his service with the RAF during World War 2..... a brilliant ground engineer, who sadly couldn't become a Flight Engineer due to colour blindness. His career at STN included employment with LAMS, CAAFU, ATEL and Skyways.

I'm sure many STN people will be delighted to know that Ted Barrett is still going strong at the age of 97 and is the oldest person in the UK who still has an active Private Pilot's Licence. Regarded by all his colleagues at ATEL Ltd as one of the very finest aeronautical engineers ever seen at STN.

Ted is the oldest private pilot in the UK and he shares with us his passion to keep Panshanger open for the community. Make a pledge and join the team www.pr...

To all friends on Facebook, I'm in the process of preparing a book about the community of men and women who helped to establish Stansted Airport (STN) from 1943 onwards. My father, Vic Heath, and many other brilliant aviation professionals gave remarkable service to their companies and organisations and I want to pay tribute to them all. Some names from the early years include Ted Barret, Reg Farmer, Peter Doyle, Reg Staveley, Maurice Gingell, Norman Benson, 'Paddy' Simpson, 'Chalky' White, Frank Searle, Rex Selby, Frank Precey, Fred Hansen and many more.

Please upload any photos or videos you might have, especially the 'pre-expansion' years. It would also help if you can details of your family member and/or friends plus spouse maiden name, their employers, the years they worked at STN and also their war service plus any types flown and medals awarded.

Many thanks indeed, Kieron Heath
