Walcon Marine has carried out a survey of D & E pontoons in the Victoria Marina in the heart of St Peter Port harbour, Guernsey, in the UK’s Channel Islands.

“Walcon produced a quote and working drawings with specifications and once agreed, the pontoons went in to manufacture and delivery commenced,” said Martyn Stanfield, Head of Technical & Estate Services, Guernsey Harbours and Airports.

“The Guernsey Ports technical team carried out the refurbishment of the piles and the installation of the pontoons and associated infrastructure. The pontoons as always fitted as per the drawings with Walcon attending to confirm fitting had been carried carried out as per instructions and to a good standard.”

The December picture of the month taken from our 2025 desktop flip calendar is a reminder of summer days. Last year we completed an installation for DB Marine, a company located in Cookham on the River Thames that supports boat owners with a range of services. The project involved the removal of the existing pontoons and replacing them with a larger facility made up of four piers totalling 112 metres and 26 finger pontoons, all built using Walcon’s System 2000 product with timber decking. Riverworks Ltd was responsible for the piling.

If you're coming to the Southampton Boat Show this week, do stop by our stand (W048), the second stand south of the marina bridge opposite the exhibition halls. Our team will be happy to discuss your berthing needs while at the same time looking over the world's largest temporary marina, designed and built by Walcon.

Another year, another Southampton Boat Show Marina to be manufactured, installed and then dismantled following the ten-day event. It is a major logistical feat with work beginning early in the spring as the fabrication of the pontoons gets underway. The next phase is the installation of around 50 piles using Walcon’s piling rig, after which the process of installing almost 10,000 square metres of pontoons, all of which are brought in by sea on Walcon’s barges. Last of all, just a week or two before the show opens and with the boats already arriving, the three bridges that link the marina to the shore are installed.

"The experience that we have accumulated over the years serves us well," says MD James Walters. "Since we installed our first SIBS marina back in 1972, they have endured all sorts of weather, including some serious storms and the waves that go with them. But they have come through thanks to our heavy-duty, wave-attenuating pontoons that form the outer perimeter and also host the largest yachts, tall ships and other vessels.”

A September picture from the 2025 Walcon Marine calendar. Itchenor is an active dinghy and keelboat club. We installed an all-new river pontoon built with our System 21 units and repaired and reconfigured the main jetty so as to make it easier to get dingies on to the slipway.

We have undertaken a series of significant upgrades at boatfolk’s Royal Quays Marina in North Shields, in the North East of England. The works were split into two phases. The first took place in the autumn of last year, followed by the second in 2025.

The contract involved the extension of a number of the existing piers, together with the installation of a new pier, all to add capacity, and also the replacement of the marina’s lock pontoons. To accelerate the works, Walcon’s Ravenstein barge complete with the piling rig made the trip north to drive the additional piles. The barge is a recent addition to Walcon’s assets. Its modular construction makes it easy to transport by road and quick to both assemble in the necessary configuration on arrival and disassemble once a project is completed.

The first phase focussed on the extension of existing piers A to F, followed by the installation of the new Pier G. The second phase took place in the spring and involved the design, build and installation of a new, easier access pontoon. This required a bespoke solution, which serves both the marina’s boatyard and the hoist dock.

With the works completed, Royal Quays Marina has increased its capacity from 350 berths to a total of 400. The works are also part of a broader investment to accommodate increased demand as well as the capacity to take vessels up to 50 metres in length, enhancing the marina’s appeal for both leisure and commercial users.

“From planning through to final snagging, the Walcon team were excellent: professional, proactive and quick to address challenges as they arose,” said Keeran Stephenson, Marina Manager. “They delivered a significant extension to the marina and boatyard, including new pontoons and driven piles, with regular site visits from the Project Manager to check progress, resolve issues, and ensure everything stayed on track. The end result has made a real operational difference to the marina, and their collaborative approach gave us confidence at every stage.”

Walcon has delivered a replacement of a leisure pontoon located a short distance north of the Menai Suspension Bridge. This iconic structure, which links the Isle of Anglesey with the north-west tip of Wales, was designed and built by the famous Scottish engineer Thomas Telford to connect the island with the British mainland. It was completed in 1826 and is currently undergoing a major refurbishment programme ahead of its 200th anniversary.

The pontoon contract was awarded to Walcon by Anglesey County Council and encompassed the design, manufacture, supply and installation of the new leisure pontoon. The brief was to deliver a solution that would safeguard access to the water for customers, provide safe and accessible mooring for visiting boats, and ensure that the infrastructure is fit for future demands.

The project is a significant component of the council’s commitment to supporting tourism in the region. The leisure pontoon is an important amenity for visitors arriving by water, and there was a strong emphasis on the timely completion of the works to minimise disruption and maximise the facility's availability for use.

We have been back at Southampton Solent University's Ship Handling Centre at Timsbury Lake for some repairs and upgrades. One of only two of its kind in the world, the SHC uses scale models of tankers and other vessel types to train pilots in manoeuvring in restrictive and high traffic waters. Challenges for the participants include navigating buoyed channels, critical bends and turning basins. Walcon is responsible for the 22 jetties that form an important part of the training programmes.

"Walcon Marine Ltd delivered a well-built and reliable pontoon and fixed berth infrastructure for our Ship Handling Centre at Timsbury," said Martin Greenslade, Senior Lecturer Ship Handling at Warsash Maritime School. "The installation has stood the test of time, providing safe, stable, and accessible multi-berth space essential for our manned model training operations."

Earlier in the summer, Walcon supplied the infrastructure for the new Double Steps Pontoon in the , Devon. The design is fully customised to both meet the profile of the steps and to allow a wide range of craft to come alongside safely. In a statement to the local press, Harbourmaster Paul Britton said: “This pontoon has always been very busy, as it’s the main dinghy mooring in the town, as well as being the base for the Dittisham and Noss ferries, yacht taxis and hire boats.

"We’ve been able to simplify our original plans, meaning much less visual intrusion on the view from the embankment, particularly as we have ‘recycled’ the old Docking Solutions pontoon which was moored offshore, to become the outer part of the new Double Steps Pontoon.

“The new facility, as well as providing new deep water berths for the yacht taxis and ferries, provides additional space for dinghies and much-needed room for visiting RIBs and dayboats. We have also been able to provide a 20 minute drop off/pick up berth which the harbour has been lacking in the past."

It has been nearly 15 years since years Imperial Wharf Marina on the River Thames was fabricated and installed by Walcon, including the dolphins. On a blistering hot day last week it was looking good, with the 600 metres of alongside berthing filled with a wide variety of boats.
To keep it in place given the tidal flows, we drove 27 piles deep into the riverbed and fabricated a sturdy steel framework to hold the fibre concrete floats and hardwood decking. And all just a few metres from the busy Battersea Rail Bridge and the luxury Imperial Wharf riverside complex!
