Today, Salcombe Harbour Authority's new workboat, Milestone, arrives in Salcombe following her journey from the Parkol Marine Engineering yard in Whitby, where she was built.

She is expected to cross the Bar at approximately 15:00 and will be escorted into the harbour by a number of vessels. Although this coincides with low water, those wishing to show their support, or simply wave her welcome, are encouraged to keep an eye out for her arrival.

Milestone will initially berth alongside Normandy Pontoon. While she will not be open to the public for tours at this stage, excellent views can be enjoyed from Whitestrand Car Park and the surrounding pontoons.

As her name suggests, Milestone represents the culmination of 20 years of planning, investment, and saving. She replaces our existing barge and provides a significantly enhanced working platform, delivering improvements in both safety and operational capability. Her primary role will be to support the maintenance of Salcombe Harbour Authority's moorings and navigational marks, helping to ensure the continued safe operation of the harbour.

11/09/2026

At high water this morning, Build 072 (Milestone) passed through Whitby's swing bridge to begin the journey to her home port of Salcombe in Devon. The 15.58-metre workboat's purpose is service and maintenance of the moorings and infrastructure within control of Salcombe Harbour Authority. Congratulations to her owners and to everyone involved in the vessel's development and build.

At this time groups of swimmers will be rounding marks in the area highlighted below with lifeguards on paddleboards in attendance at all times. This location is not in the main navigable channel into Salcombe Harbour, north of the port hand marks and corresponding isolated rocks.
Please pay particular attention to keeping an eye out for swimmers in the wider area and give the swimming course, the participants and those providing safety cover a wide berth, keeping wake to a minimum.

The event will also include information and equipment to securely mark high-value items and register them in a database, making it significantly easier for police to reunite recovered stolen goods with their rightful owners.

⚠️ Weekend Weather Advisory

After a particularly pleasant summer season, this weekend is expected to bring a significant change in weather conditions, with strong winds and heavy rainfall forecast across the region for the first time in many weeks.

We strongly encourage anyone planning to go afloat to make appropriate preparations and exercise extra caution. Forecast conditions include strong south-westerly winds, heavy rain, possible thunderstorms, increased swell, and spring tides, all of which may create challenging conditions on the water.

Please ensure your vessel is securely moored and thoroughly checked. Particular attention should be given to mooring lines, fenders, and any equipment that could become loose in strong winds. Owners are also advised to ensure vessels are adequately bailed and free from any significant accumulation of rainwater.

Met Office Warning Issued at 12:00 UTC on Friday 28 August 2026: Lyme Regis to Lands End, including the Isles of Scilly – Strong Wind Warning.

24 hour forecast: Southwest, becoming cyclonic later, 4 to 6, occasionally 7 later, perhaps gale 8 later near the Isles of Scilly. Slight or moderate, becoming rough later in west. Rain or showers, perhaps thundery later. Good, occasionally moderate at first and poor later.

Outlook for the following 24 hours: Cyclonic 5 to 7 becoming west 3 to 5, backing southwest 4 to 6 later. Moderate or rough, becoming slight or moderate later in east. Showers, perhaps thundery at first. Good, occasionally poor at first and moderate later.

Please take particular care around exposed coastlines, harbour fronts, pontoons, and waterfront areas, and do not put yourself at unnecessary risk.

For urgent harbour matters within the Salcombe and Kingsbridge Estuary, please contact our out-of-hours service on 01803 861539.

If you witness an emergency at sea or along the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Stay safe, plan ahead, and enjoy the weekend responsibly.
