In 1363 , William De Carnys was the owner of The Baronies of East and West Whitburn, in Linlithgow. A man on considerable importance, the son of Duncan De Carnys and the Constable of Linlithgow Place.
Mary Queen of Scots was born on 8 December 1542 at Linlithgow Palace, Scotland, to King James V and his French second wife, Mary of Guise. She was said to have been born prematurely and was the only legitimate child of James to survive him.[5] She was the great-niece of King Henry VIII of England, as her paternal grandmother, Margaret Tudor, was Henry VIII's sister. On 14 December, six days after her birth, she became Queen of Scotland when her father died, perhaps from the effects of a nervous collapse following the Battle of Solway Moss,[6] or from drinking contaminated water while on campaign.
The young Mary spent much of her early life in France and returned after the death of her husband Francis II on the 14th August 1561. The crossing was unpleasant and the weather was not great when they landed at Leith , Mary was tired and weak from the journey but was looking forward to having a wee dram of the secret elixir that had been created as a tonic many years before. The elderberries , honey and secret herbs coupled with ‘the water of life’ The recipe and a few bottles were smuggled over from France . The liqueur that would gifted to the descendants of William De Carnys , is now recreated for you as the Cairns Scotch Whisky Liqueur
