πŸ”Œβš‘πŸš— The UK government's fresh guidance, aimed at helping local authorities develop policies for cross-pavement charging solutions, could offer a lifeline to drivers without off-street parking - as reported by electric cars expert, Electrifying.com.

The Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom, and the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles have outlined key factors for to consider when assessing planning applications. These include the availability of on-street parking adjacent to the applicant’s property, responsibility for installation and maintenance, costs and licensing, and minimum technical standards for the charging channels.

For electric owners without driveways, charging at public points is less convenient and significantly more expensive. According to data from Zapmap public charging can cost drivers over Β£1,000 more annually than charging at home. This disparity has pushed some to illegally stretch cables across pavements, creating potential pedestrian hazards.

The high cost of public charging continues to present a significant barrier to widespread adoption for disabled drivers.

Despite a fall in wholesale energy prices, the cost of charging an electric vehicle using public rapid and ultra-rapid chargers remains stubbornly high, new data from the RAC shows. The average cost of a rapid pay-as-you-go charge, using chargers with power outputs between 50 and 149 kilowatts, currently stands at just under 80p per kilowatt hour (79.19p per kWh), virtually unchanged on the start of the year (79.55p) but up 4% since a year ago and up 28% on two years ago.

Drivers today, therefore, pay Β£41.18 to charge a family-sized electric car from 10% to 80%, adding a range of around 170 miles.

Motability Scheme CEO, Andrew Miller, said: "The affordability and accessibility of public charging is crucial if the transition to electric vehicles is to be successful. Together with industry, if we can make it work for our disabled customers, it will work for all UK drivers."

At ODS, we are driven by our mission to make home hashtag charging more accessible for everyone with our cross-pavement EV charging solution, Gul-e.

⚑Affordable home EV charging. Save £00s per year compared to public charging.
