Piano Day

Piano Day Piano Day is a worldwide celebration of the piano. It takes place on the 88th day of the year because “Why does the world need a Piano Day? For many reasons.

But mostly, because it doesn’t hurt to celebrate the piano and everything around it: performers, composers, piano builders, tuners, movers and most important, the listener.” – Nils Frahm

One of our favourite things about Piano Day: Places is how vividly each track evokes a specific atmosphere, memory, or landscape. Whether by the sea, surrounded by nature, or sitting at home at their beloved piano, each artist created a world of their own. It’s been exciting to see how differently the idea of ‘place’ was interpreted across the compilation, giving rise to distinct textures and identities, both sonically and visually.

As we’ve been revisiting the compilation, we gathered a few visual glimpses into the places that inspired the music.

“Over the past year, I’ve often turned to nature walks as moments of refuge, seeking reflection and calm amid the world’s uncertainty and chaos. Accompanying me on these treks was my Zoom Recorder, which I used as a tool to observe and document the surrounding soundscape. With the sounds of these walks as the backdrop, this piece captures my journey wandering through the world in search of my place, striving for synchrony between my inner world and the outer landscape.”

Chinese composer and sound artist Jing Ru explores her search for refuge in ‘Land, Wander’, pairing piano with field recordings from solitary nature walks, where shifting sonic landscapes find a delicate balance within an increasingly unstable world.

“‘Fantasmas’ is built from a series of circles — melodies and subtle displacements that reflect my own distance from home. It’s a piece about the house where I grew up, the place I always return to in some way. (…) I decided to use field recordings from around the house as additional variations, blending the natural sounds with the piano melodies. These field recordings captured quiet, beautiful moments. I feel those sounds as memories — small emotional traces — and the soundscape around the house moves me. Just as I created variations on the first chord sequence, the field recordings became part of the evolving piece, changing both its mix and its meaning.”

Brazilian pianist and musicologist Daniel Stringini, now based in Rio de Janeiro, reflects on distance, memory and return in ‘Fantasmas,’ his touching contribution to Piano Day: Places.

“I was commissioned by a friend Trevor Wilkinson to compose ‘Far North’. We met at a musical retreat in Durness which lies in the very far northwest of Scotland. This piece of music is based on the landscape and Gaelic culture from that part of the world. It is a special place, with a challenging history. The landscape is dramatic with huge skies, rugged hills and cliffs, not many trees so you can see for miles and watch the weather come to you. The beaches are pristine white, big crashing waves.” .hall

In ‘Far North,’ Scottish composer and pianist Mhairi Hall remains true to her roots, transforming the expansive landscapes of northwestern Scotland into a spacious, grounded work shaped by Gaelic song and history, and imbued with a warm, rising energy.

‘Far North’ is out now as part of Piano Day: Places. Listen via the link in our bio!

“This track is inspired by the bay near where I live (on the shore of the Channel in Normandy) and the walks I do while I observe nature there, while thinking and staying silent, often in the wind. It is composed of piano and field recordings I’ve done walking around my house and in my garden, at different moments of day and night.”

In ‘The Bay’, French electroacoustic composer and sound artist Felicia Atkinson lets found sounds settle into her piano compositions without judgement: open, unforced, and guided by listening rather than intention.
