Goyt Valley Rail Users Association

Goyt Valley Rail Users Association GVRUA campaigns for better rail services on the Goyt Valley lines (Manchester Piccadilly to New Mills via Bredbury and to Rose Hill Marple via Hyde).

This page is to update members and other interested people about our work.

Access for All funding for Chinley station was in the news again courtesy of the Buxton Advertiser last week (26th February 2026). Derbyshire County Council Councillor for Whaley Bridge has secured commitment from the Mayor for the East Midlands Combined County Authority to visit Chinley station.

Some information on construction works at one of our stations to improve accessibility. Bredbury is also due to undergo similar accessibility improvements, although I've not yet seen details and exact timescales, but from my understanding it will be closer to 2027. Reddish North is due to be completed this summer.

We have to acknowledge the excellent campaigning work of Nathaniel Yates in highlighting the need for improved access at many of our stations. Well done Nathaniel!

Many other stations on the Goyt Valley line are still lacking access, of course, so still a long way to go to make all services fully accessible.

Engineering works to make Reddish North railway station more accessible are due to start soon

Don't forget there's ongoing disruption due to the work at Manchester Piccadilly. If you do happen to pass through Piccadilly (the station concourse, ticket office & shops are open, as of course is the Metrolink stop, and there are some limited services from platform 13&14), the train-less train shed is quite a strange sight!

Some very disappointing news. Chinley's accessibility improvements "will not be progressing at this point". See the post from Chinley and Buxworth Transport Group for more details, including how to make your views known to the local MP.

After 10 years of campaigning, in May 2024 Chinley finally made it onto the Department for Transport's Access for All funding list... In January 2026, Lord Hendy has just announced that Chinley is off the list.

Further details on the changes to services during Manchester Piccadilly's closure from Saturday 14 - Sunday 22 February (coinciding with the half term holidays).
For our line, "rail replacement bus services will run between Manchester Victoria and Guide Bridge and Rose Hill Marple via Romiley" - yes that's definitely Manchester Victoria! None of the buses on our route look to be arriving at Piccadilly.
The map probably helps explain the routing, but essentially for Marple and beyond, you'll get a train to Guide Bridge, then switch to a bus. From Romiley there are some trains to Guide Bridge where you'll change to a bus (which goes via Fairfield and Gorton), or you can take the bus from Romiley (and from Rose Hill Marple) all of the way into Victoria. This bus also calls at Bredbury, Brinnington, Reddish North, Ryder Brow, Belle Vue and Ashburys.
Inevitably there is a big increase in journey time.
Journeys for the dates affected are showing in the planner/ online timetables now, so probably best to check your own journeys and start planning!
Let's hope the works bring the promised increase in reliability, and make the week and a bit of disruption worth it.

A heads-up that there are no trains on our lines this weekend (20th and 21st) due to engineering work. Rail replacement buses are in operation: https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/engineering-works/new-mills-central-20-sep-20250920/ This applies to Rose Hill too, although the link only says New Mills.

There are also strikes affecting many Bee Network buses from Friday-Monday, so not a great time for getting around by public transport unfortunately!

Buses replace trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Rose Hill Marple / Chinley on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September. Although this is specific to Reddish North and only covers the main peak services, sharing as it gives an idea of the timetable changes in August - essentially some timing changes and the "peak extras" not running. Full timetables are showing on the National Rail website/ Northern journey planner to check a specific journey.
