The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has still not unveiled its unpopular and disproportionate new rules for older Thames passenger boats - nearly three and a half years since first announced. When will concerned owners get to see what is being planned? Is this a responsible way to treat a proud and hardworking sector? Parliamentary supporters want to know what is going on……….

When trying to justify their damaging and unpopular plans for older Thames passenger boats the MCA claims that the tidal Thames is very busy again with heavy barge movements. But digging of the western section of the Tideway Tunnel at Fulham is now complete and the last heavy barges have left this part of the tidal Thames - having shifted 850,000 tonnes of material. If the plans don't change the Thames will lose up to 25 older passenger boats

If the damaging and unpopular Maritime and Coastguard Agency plans for older Thames passenger boats go ahead then it will not just mean the loss of up to 25 vessels on the river. They will also force the closure of long established boatyards which rely on the annual survey and maintenance work that these vessels require. We need a pragmatic, fair and workable solution so that boats are not lost and boatyards are not forced to close
