Filming celebrities swimming with apex predators takes more than a good edit.

On SHARK! (Nine Network, Australia), our team led safety across every dive in the Bahamas: medics, paramedics and free dive experts, working alongside the crew every step of the way.

This is what risk management looks like underwater!

Thanks to the awesome team Plimsoll Studios and ITV Studios Australia for making it happen.

📌 Save this checklist before your next shoot.

After supporting hundreds of productions, there are eight areas we expect every production risk assessment to cover:

✓ Team and personnel ✓ Medical ✓ Environment ✓ Security ✓ Activities ✓ Transport and accommodation ✓ Legal ✓ Emergency planning

The framework stays the same. The detail should always reflect the specific production, whether you're filming in a studio or a remote location.

We've written a practical guide explaining what each section should include, where productions commonly miss detail, and what good looks like in each.

Six territories. Two and a half years. One production.

Antarctica. Ecuador. Bhutan. Botswana. Papua New Guinea. The North Pole.

Every environment different. Every operation built from scratch around what that specific place and that specific production required.

"Integrated risk management isn't optional at this level. It's essential." — Tom Bodkin, Lead safety for Secret Compass.

Produced by Nutopia for National Geographic and Disney+. Our thanks to Series Showrunner Tom Williams and the entire Pole to Pole production team.

A risk assessment that works for a city shoot can be dangerously inadequate for a remote one.

Because when something goes wrong in a remote environment, everything changes.

An evacuation might take hours, not minutes.

The kit you forgot might be impossible to replace.

And the biggest hazards are often the ones your team don't even know to look for.

We've supported productions filming in jungles, deserts, polar regions, mountains and hostile security environments, and the shoots that manage risk best all have one thing in common:

They start planning early enough to change things, not just document them.

We've put together a guide covering the hazards standard templates often miss, when specialist support is needed, and where a structured first draft can help teams get started faster.

After the North Pole, Botswana might sound straightforward.

It isn't.

Big game territory has its own risk profile. The wildlife is not a backdrop, it's a variable. One that doesn't follow a schedule and doesn't respond to a risk assessment written in an office.

Every territory on Pole to Pole looked different. The approach to each was the same: understand the environment before you arrive, put the right people in place, and plan for what you can't predict.

Most production risk assessments are written alone, late, against a deadline.

Sound familiar? Try this:

Before you open a blank document: get your key people together. Find a whiteboard. Write down where you're going, what you're doing, who's going, when, and how you're getting around.

Then look at what you've written.

The hazards appear by themselves.

From there, structure what you've found under clear headings: team, medical, environment, security, activities, transport, legal, emergency planning. Work through likelihood, consequence and controls for each.

The risk assessment isn't the hard part. Getting the right people in the room is!

We've written a practical guide to the full process, drawn from 350+ productions across 111 countries. If you've got a shoot coming up, it's worth a read.

Diving under the ice at the North Pole is serious enough when you're an experienced diver.

Will Smith is not an experienced diver.

Getting him into the water in an overhead environment in extreme cold required one thing from us before anyone committed: clarity. How much training would he need? Where could it happen? Was it realistic in his schedule?

Answer those questions early and production can make an informed decision. Answer them late and the money has already been spent.

We defined the parameters. Production made the call. It happened!
