Deep in the Torricelli Mountains, the Wilderness with Simon Reeve team were searching for one of the world's rarest mammals: the Tenkile.

After days of travelling into the mountains and trekking through the jungle, the expedition team set out from their camp to search for this elusive tree kangaroo.

For our safety advisor and paramedic Si Reed it meant working alongside the team in some seriously remote terrain, with medical facilities a long way away.

The search took them deep into the jungle. And the Tenkile proved every bit as elusive as expected...

Some of the moments in Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test look seriously dangerous.

That’s the point.

The challenge for the safety team is to help create the jeopardy the format needs, while keeping the actual risk controlled.

As Secret Compass Safety Lead for the show, Tom Bodkin puts it:

“Maximum perceived risk. Minimum actual risk.”

That balance sits at the heart of production safety on a show like this.

Episode one of Special Forces: World's Toughest Test is out now on Fox.

We were in Malaysia with Minnow Films for season 5, looking after safety across the shoot. Our founder Tom Bodkin led the team on the ground, working alongside the DS and the production on everything from rope work to boat tasks and a lot of mud in between.

A long way from medical care.

On the way into the Torricelli Mountains, the Wilderness with Simon Reeve team stopped at Mupun village, where they were given a traditional welcome before continuing into the jungle.

For our consultant Si Reed, the trip wasn't only about supporting the expedition team. With no medical facilities in the area, he also spent time providing basic medical care to local people at the jungle camp.

It's one of the less visible parts of working on an expedition like this: being prepared to use your skills wherever they're needed.

Supercars racing fighter jets on a desert airstrip. That's the kind of sequence Secret Compass was brought in to help plan for The Grand Tour.

One of the sequences involved three supercars racing three fighter jets in a relay, plus helicopters and drones, all within a tight window set by air traffic control.

We were involved from initial scouts through to all shoots, working the risk behind moments that are built to look out of control.

Everyone's asking what the new Grand Tour hosts will be like. We already know.

For the first time in this show's history, one team held the risk picture across the whole production. Fifteen months. Three countries. Every scout, every recce, every shoot. That team was us.

Here's what surprised us: a genuinely fresh start turned out to be easier than inheriting years of established habits. New hosts, new production company, nothing to work around, no "that's not how we've always done it." Just an awesome team up for collaborating on something genuinely epic from day one.

This is the first in a series on what it actually took to make it happen. More to come.

After the North Pole, Botswana might sound straightforward.

It isn't.

Big game territory has its own risk profile. The wildlife is not a backdrop, it's a variable. One that doesn't follow a schedule and doesn't respond to a risk assessment written in an office.

Every territory on Pole to Pole looked different. The approach to each was the same: understand the environment before you arrive, put the right people in place, and plan for what you can't predict.
