The Jumbo Jet Age Arrives in Britain. 🇬🇧✈️🇺🇸

A historic moment at London Heathrow Airport on 22 January 1970, as the Pan American World Airways crew walk across the apron following the arrival of the first scheduled commercial Boeing 747 service from New York JFK to London Heathrow.

Behind them stands Boeing 747-121 N736PA, the aircraft that operated the landmark flight. The arrival of Pan Am’s enormous new “Jumbo Jet” represented a new era in international air travel, carrying more passengers farther and helping transform long-haul flying for generations.

✈️🎨🖼️ A VERY SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO 34 YEARS OF FLYING! 🇬🇧

Some artwork commissions are particularly special, and this is certainly one of them!

We are delighted to share this beautiful, bespoke aviation artwork created in honour of Captain Phil Pratt, celebrating an incredible 34 years of dedicated service with British Airways, from 16th February 1989 to 22nd March 2023.

This unique retirement tribute features seven beautifully illustrated British Airways aircraft, representing the evolution of the airline and Captain Pratt's remarkable aviation career.

But what makes this commission even more special is the presentation!

Our artwork has been professionally printed and mounted within a stunning bespoke frame, incorporating Captain Pratt's original British Airways Captain's epaulettes, pilot wings, name badge and BA insignia, creating a truly personal and meaningful keepsake.

Every element has been carefully arranged to celebrate a lifetime of aviation memories, dedication and achievement.

I’m incredibly honoured and proud to announce that Airliners Illustrated® has just won our 6th award in 22 years! ✈️🎨🏆

For such a small team, this is a truly massive achievement and one that means so much to me. Airliners Illustrated has always been driven by my lifelong passion for aviation and art, but none of this happens entirely alone. A huge thank you to my good friend Andy Hay, who helps me with the artwork, and to my fantastic printers and framers who help transform my illustrations into the finished pieces that reach customers around the world. We are all part of one team. 💙

Imagine Taking Today’s Camera Into Yesterday
⏳️🕰📷🌈✈️🇬🇧1️⃣9️⃣6️⃣5️⃣ BOAC VC10 at London Heathrow — c.1965

A wonderful glimpse of **London Heathrow in the mid-1960s**, showing a BOAC Vickers VC10 surrounded by the everyday activity of the airport apron. Period BOAC buses, service vans, passenger steps and ground equipment crowd around the aircraft, while spectators can be seen enjoying the view from the terminal terrace — a reminder of an era when watching aircraft at Heathrow was part of the airport experience.

For **TimeLens Illustrated**, the original photograph by **Daves_Archive** has been carefully reimagined and restored in **full technicolour and 4K clarity**, enhancing sharpness, colour, contrast and fine detail while preserving the atmosphere and historic character of the original scene. The aim is to present Heathrow circa 1965 as though it had been captured yesterday with a modern digital camera.

A very special Airliners Illustrated® recognition piece, created to celebrate Senior First Officer Steve Cheyne and more than 24 years of service with British Midland (1999–2000) and British Airways (2000–2023).

The artwork brings together aircraft representing the different chapters of an aviation career, before being professionally framed alongside the recipient’s pilot wings, British Airways name badge and Senior First Officer epaulettes.

Seeing the finished artwork transformed into a complete framed presentation is always special. More than simply an aircraft illustration, it becomes a lasting record of a career, the aircraft flown and the years of dedication behind the uniform.

⏳️🕰📷🌈✈️🇬🇧1️⃣9️⃣6️⃣4️⃣London Heathrow, 1 August 1964 — The BEA Trident Era

A wonderful glimpse of London Airport during the golden age of British aviation, photographed by **Michael Thorne** on **1 August 1964**. At the centre is **British European Airways Hawker Siddeley Trident 1 G-ARPH**, flanked by two BEA Vickers Vanguards, with period ground vehicles, airport activity and passengers completing this evocative Heathrow scene.

Designed largely around BEA’s requirements, the distinctive three-engined Trident represented a new generation of British jet travel during the 1960s, although internationally it would ultimately be outsold by its American rival, the Boeing 727.

**TimeLens Illustrated** has carefully restored and reimagined Michael Thorne’s original photograph in **full technicolour and 4K clarity**, enhancing the faded colours, definition and fine details while remaining faithful to the aircraft, vehicles, people and surroundings captured in 1964 — bringing the scene to life as though photographed with a modern digital camera.
