An Poitín Still
An Poitin Still Pub, right in the heart of Carrick-on-Shannon, is exactly the sort of place that reminds you why family-run Irish pubs remain so special. Having been in the same family for many years, there is a genuine sense of pride here, and it shows in everything they do. The staff are wonderfully attentive, always ready to go that extra mile, while the food is honest, flavoursome and served in portions that certainly won’t leave you hungry. Whether you’re calling in for breakfast, lunch or grabbing an evening bite, there is something to suit every appetite. As night falls, the atmosphere steps up a gear, particularly at weekends, with pool, darts and live sport adding to the buzz. A proper Irish pub in every sense.

Rosdarrig Bed & Breakfast
There are great Irish B&Bs, and then there are those rather special places that stay with you long after you leave. Rosdarrig Bed & Breakfast, in the popular Co. Roscommon town of Boyle, firmly belongs in the latter category. Hosts Brenda and Gerry have created, in my opinion, one of the finest B&B experiences in the region. The beautiful bedrooms are furnished to an exceptionally high standard, while breakfast is generous, delicious and certainly worthy of the phrase “fit for a king”. What really makes Rosdarrig memorable, however, is the warmth of its hosts; I could quite happily have chatted with Brenda and Gerry for hours. With Boyle Abbey, King House and Lough Key Forest Park nearby, this is a superb base for exploring Roscommon and beyond.

Lough Ree Distillery
There are some places you include in a book because they are good, and others because they have a story that simply deserves to be told. Lough Ree Distillery falls firmly into both. Set beside the River Shannon in Lanesborough, this wonderfully compact operation is, as I like to call it, the biggest small distillery I have encountered to date. Siblings Peter, Sheila and Mike Clancy have created something with genuine personality, rooted deeply in their own family history. Their parents first came to Lanesborough as teachers, met here, fell in love, and began a family story that continues through the distillery today. Each sibling brings different strengths to the business, and that sense of collaboration is evident throughout. From wh***ey tastings and distillery tours to gin and vodka experiences, there is plenty here for drinks enthusiasts. Booking ahead is strongly recommended, as this gem deserves every bit of attention it receives.

The Spoon and the Stars
The Spoon and the Stars really is one of those delightful little finds that makes travelling on a budget feel anything but ordinary. Perfectly positioned in Drogheda, with Dublin and Dublin Airport within easy reach, it offers excellent value without sacrificing character or comfort. Hosts Rory and Hannah have created a wonderfully relaxed, home-from-home atmosphere, welcoming everyone from solo travellers and couples to those simply preferring the privacy of their own room. Set within an attractive Georgian building, the hostel has a huge personality. I particularly like the excellent communal kitchen and dining area, giving guests the freedom to prepare their own meals, while the outdoor seating space is perfect for unwinding. In Dublin, accommodation with this much character would undoubtedly command considerably higher prices.

The Kissin Crust
The Kissin Crust is one of those places that reminds you why locally owned cafés matter so much. Sitting in the Upper Lough Erne town of Lisnaskea, this much-loved coffee shop has been part of the local fabric for more than two decades. Under the steady hand of Alma Kinnear, it has weathered difficult times without losing the warmth, quality or character that regulars value. The food goes well beyond cakes and hot drinks, with fresh, honest dishes prepared with care and plenty of heart. There is a reassuring homemade feel to what comes from the kitchen, supported by fresh produce and generous portions. Add friendly service and smiles, and The Kissin Crust remains a dependable Lisnaskea favourite that continues to deserve its loyal following.

Bubbles Adventure Alley
Right in the heart of Strabane, Bubbles Adventure Alley is one of those delightful finds that immediately puts a smile on your face. Created with enormous care by Siobhan and Darren Stewart, this independently run children’s play centre may be relatively new, but there is already a wonderful sense of warmth and purpose behind it. Siobhan’s many years of experience working with children are clearly reflected throughout, with play areas designed not simply for fun, but to encourage confidence, imagination and learning along the way. What I particularly love is the innocence of the place; it feels welcoming, secure and genuinely family focused. The friendly team adds to the relaxed atmosphere, while the charming onsite café gives parents the perfect opportunity to sit back with a freshly brewed coffee as little ones explore. Bubbles Adventure Alley is a lovely addition to Strabane and a place families will happily return to.

Buvinda B&B & Self Catering Cottage
Just a few miles from bustling Drogheda, Buvinda B&B enjoys a remarkable position in the heart of the Boyne Valley, directly overlooking the historic Battle of the Boyne landscape. I arrived expecting a pleasant visit, but Buvinda genuinely exceeded expectations. Hosts Michele and Arthur, together with their son Arthur Jnr, are every bit as welcoming as the many glowing reviews suggest, giving the property a personal character. Accommodation includes a small selection of comfortable rooms within the house, alongside a charming self-catering cottage next door. Its location makes exploring this fascinating part of Ireland easy, with Northern Ireland around 40 minutes away and Dublin roughly 50 minutes by car. Add a light breakfast before heading out, and Buvinda becomes a memorable base I happily recommend.

The Kings Head at Ravenstonedale
The Kings Head in Ravenstonedale is everything a great country pub should be: traditional, welcoming and full of character. Owner Kenni James has created something very special here, and what makes this place stand out is that neither the food nor the accommodation has to play second fiddle. Upstairs, six beautifully designed bedrooms offer comfort and style in equal measure, each individually finished with attention to detail. In my opinion, they would not look out of place in a five-star hotel, with Kenni’s partner deserving much of the credit for their design. Downstairs, the atmosphere is exactly what you hope for from a proper village pub. Log fires crackle, glasses are raised, conversation fills the room and excellent food keeps arriving from the kitchen. There is a warmth and romance to the Kings Head without it ever feeling contrived. This is a pub you arrive at happily and leave reluctantly.

The Fat Lamb Country Inn
The Fat Lamb Country Inn at Ravenstonedale is one of those places that adds something special to a day spent exploring this corner of northern England. Perfectly positioned close to the Yorkshire Dales and the Cumbrian border, this characterful inn has plenty to interest visitors before they even reach the bar. Motoring fans will enjoy the collection of car memorabilia displayed throughout the building, giving the Fat Lamb an individuality all of its own. The food is another good reason to call in. Properly prepared, generous and full of flavour, the menu reflects everything you want from a country pub, with fresh cooking taking priority over convenience. There are also comfortable bedrooms for those wishing to stay longer and explore the countryside. Owner Paul and his welcoming team have created a genuine, unpretentious country inn that remains open seven days a week and is well worth adding to your itinerary.
