Wheels 2 Work South West Now offering Motorcycle Repairs & Servicing based in Launceston. Over the years we have helped more than 12,000 people to meet their travel needs.

A local charity (no. 1194170) helping people overcome transport barriers by providing affordable scooter and eBike hire to access work, education and training across Devon and Cornwall. Wheels 2 Work South West provides subsidised scooter and eBike rental to allow people living and working in Devon and Cornwall to travel to employment, education, training, social opportunities and local services.

Our rental scheme costs from £58 per week for an insured, taxed and maintained scooter or just £20 per week for an electric bicycle. We receive funding from Devon County Council and are always looking for other sources to help keep costs down for programme users.

☀️➡️🌧️ Your bike has worked hard this summer… has it had a check-up? 🏍️

We've had a fantastic run of warm, dry weather, and hopefully plenty of you have enjoyed getting out on two wheels.

But after months of sunshine, longer journeys and dry, dusty roads, now is a good time to give your bike some attention before the wetter months really set in.

Things worth checking include:

🔧 Oil & fluids
🛑 Brake pads & discs
🏍️ Tyres & pressures
⛓️ Chain & sprockets
💡 Lights & electrics
🔋 Battery
🌧️ General condition

Spotting a small problem now could save you from a much bigger repair later - and it's much nicer to discover a worn tyre or tired battery in the workshop than halfway through a wet journey!

🌧️ Rain doesn't have to stop you riding… but it does mean changing how you ride! 🏍️

After a long spell of hot, dry weather, riding in the rain can feel like a bit of a shock to the system.

Here are 6 top tips to make your journey safer and more comfortable:

1. Give yourself extra following distance so you've got more time to react and stop.

2. Avoid harsh braking, particularly when cornering or riding over slippery surfaces.

3. Watch out for painted lines and metal covers – These can become surprisingly slippery when wet.

4. Keep an eye out for potholes and standing water – Heavy rain can hide hazards beneath the surface.

5. Keep your visor clear – Make sure it's clean and use an anti-fog solution or insert if necessary.

5. Stay dry and visible – Good waterproof riding gear will make a huge difference, particularly if you're commuting.

6. And perhaps most importantly… give yourself a little extra time. There's no prize for getting there five minutes faster!

Stay safe out there and enjoy the ride, whatever the weather.

🌧️ The rain is back… is your bike ready? 🏍️

After months of sunshine and dry roads, we're getting some proper rain again!

A change in weather is a good reminder to give your bike a quick check. Wet roads can highlight problems that might not have been obvious during the dry spell.

Before heading out, check:

🛞 Tyres – Are they at the correct pressure and do they have plenty of tread?

🛑 Brakes – Are they working smoothly and giving you plenty of stopping power?

💡 Lights – Make sure you can see and, just as importantly, be seen.

⛓️ Chain – Rain can wash away lubrication, so give your chain some attention and keep it properly lubricated.

🪟 Visor – Keep it clean and check that it's clear and free from scratches that could make visibility worse in rain or low light.

And remember, roads can be particularly slippery when rain arrives after a long dry spell. Give yourself extra stopping distance, watch out for oil and fuel spills and take it easy around corners.

🏍️ What is a CBT... and why do I need one?

If you're thinking about riding a scooter or motorcycle for the first time, you've probably heard people mention a CBT. But what exactly is it?

CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training. It's the course that allows you to ride on the road safely and legally before progressing to a full motorcycle licence.

During your CBT, you'll learn:

✅ How to carry out basic safety checks on your bike.
✅ Essential motorcycle controls and how to use them.
✅ Safe riding techniques in a training area.
✅ How to ride confidently on the road with an instructor.

A CBT isn't a test that you pass or fail. It's designed to make sure you can ride safely on your own. Once you've successfully completed the course, you'll receive a DL196 certificate, which allows you to ride:
🛵 A moped from age 16 (up to 50cc).
🏍️ A motorcycle up to 125cc (if you're 17 or over).

Remember, a CBT certificate is valid for two years. If you don't pass your full motorcycle test within that time, you'll need to complete another CBT to continue riding.

Whether you're riding to work, college or simply enjoying the freedom of two wheels, a CBT is the first step on your motorcycling journey.

🚲 Happy Cycle to Work Day! 🚲

For many of us, getting to work is something we take for granted. But for people living in rural Devon and Cornwall, limited public transport can make simply getting to a job one of life's biggest challenges.

Over the past five years, our Wheels 2 Work Electric programme has helped change that.

Our subsidised eBikes have enabled people to travel to work as nurses caring for their communities, teachers inspiring the next generation, landscapers working across the countryside, domiciliary carers visiting vulnerable people in their own homes, and staff in local cafés, pasty shops and ice cream parlours. They've also helped people running their own businesses and many others who simply needed a reliable way to get to work.

Every e-bike we've loaned represents more than just a journey. It represents an opportunity that might otherwise have been out of reach -a first day in a new job, a promotion, a fresh start, or simply the freedom of knowing you can get to work independently.

On Cycle to Work Day, we're celebrating every rider who has chosen to cycle to work, every employer who has supported sustainable travel, and everyone who has been part of our Wheels 2 Work Electric journey.

Because everyone deserves the opportunity to get to work, regardless of where they live.

🛵 Project Bike Challenge!

Meet our latest workshop project... a 2004 Yamaha Neos.

This one is going to be interesting... This scooter has spent the last 18 years sitting in a barn!

🕸️ Infested with spiders
🍂 Packed with leaves, cobwebs and dust
⚙️ A drive belt casing full of corrosion
🛞 A seized rear wheel
🔧 And it's a complete non-starter!

So why have we brought it into the workshop?

This September, one of our customers - a local young man - will be starting a Level 1 Motorcycle Maintenance & Repair course at college. We wanted to give him a real project to get stuck into and develop his skills alongside our experienced mechanic Kia.

It won't be an easy task, but every seized bolt, rusty component and fault to diagnose is another opportunity to learn.

The big question is...

❓Can he bring this Yamaha Neos back to life?

Follow our page over the coming weeks as we share the progress. We can't wait to see how this project develops - and hopefully hear that engine fire into life once again! 🏍️💨

Safe, Sustainable Travel Torbay is campaigning for safe, accessible and enjoyable options for transport arounf Torbay. If you're in the Torbay area, get in touch with them to try an eBike for free, gain cycle skills and confidence, or get help with fixing your own bike.
