The HPA is deeply saddened to confirm the death of Harry Revell following an incident during a match at Cowdray Park Polo Club on Friday 11 September.

Harry was a much-loved and respected member of the polo community, and our thoughts are first and foremost with his wife, family, friends, and teammates at this desperately difficult time.

Cowdray has remained in close contact with Harry’s family since the accident and both the Club and the HPA will continue to offer them the support we can.

We would like to thank the paramedics, the Air Ambulance and everyone involved in Harry’s care. As a mark of respect, the Farewell Cup has been abandoned. The remainder of the polo season at Cowdray will resume in due course. Out of respect for Harry’s family, we ask that their privacy is respected.

We recognise the impact that this will have across the polo community. Anyone affected is encouraged to seek support through Riders Minds, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by Live Chat, Free Phone on 0800 088 2073  or by Text on 07480 488 103.

JOHN NASH HEADS FOR GUINNESS WORLD RECORD! 🏅

Yorkshire polo legend John ‘Nashie’ Nash took aim at an extraordinary record at Toulston Polo Club on 5-6 September, in a bid to officially become the Guinness World Records World’s Oldest Polo Player.

At 86 years and 31 days old, John is set to surpass the previous record set by Brazil’s 85-year-old Armando Klabin in October 2017.

With over 55 seasons on the field, John learned to play in Kenya and has enjoyed polo all over the world.

He said: “I don’t really think about my age when I’m playing - I just get on the horse and try to hit the ball, hopefully in the right direction.” 👏

Congratulations John - we salute you! 🫡

📢 Could you help to shape the future of polo as an HPA Steward?

The Stewards act as the Board of the HPA, making key decisions in consultation with committees and stakeholders across the polo community.

There are two Stewards’ positions up for re-election this year, to be voted on by your Club Representatives at our winter Council Meeting.

If you’re interested in becoming a Steward, discuss with your Club and ask them to nominate you by contacting our Operations Manager, Karen Irving at [email protected]. You must be a member of the Club that nominates you.

Elections will take place in November. HPA Stewards play a vital role within the sport and we particularly encourage those with board- or trustee-level experience to apply.

Check your Blue Book for more information on the role of the HPA Stewards and contact us with any questions.

📢 4 Goal Super League Update: West Zone

With the recent dry weather and no significant rainfall forecast, both Druids Lodge Polo Club and Tedworth Park Polo Club have made the difficult decision to cancel their upcoming 4-goal Super League Qualifiers. This is a huge disappointment for all involved and comes despite the clubs’ best efforts to maintain the grounds.

The remaining tournament at Vaux Park will go ahead, scheduled to start on 5 August. Vaux Park are actively watering the ground to prepare for the tournament.

In agreement with the clubs in the West Zone, the Vaux Park tournament will become a DIRECT QUALIFIER for the Super League Semi Finals. The winning team from this tournament will qualify for the semi-finals at Black Bears on 24 August.

It’s winner-takes-it-all, and entries are still OPEN! Final entries must be in by midnight Sunday 2 August. Contact Vaux Park Polo Club or visit the VPPC website to enter.

🐴 Did you know that more than 150 horses took part in International Day?

From tiny Biscuit, proudly carrying the England flag, to breathtaking Guri Espanola, winner of the coveted Bendicks Best Playing Pony prize, every horse on the field is unique, and every one is a superstar.

What many people don’t see is that the match itself is just a small part of a polo pony’s life.

High standards of horse welfare are built on year-round care. This includes carefully managed fitness programmes, balanced nutrition, regular veterinary, farriery, and dental care, and much more. Crucially, they benefit from experienced horsemanship thanks to a highly skilled team of grooms dedicated to their care.

Polo also places welfare at the centre of the game itself. Horses play in short chukkas to avoid fatigue, with players changing horses regularly so that no horse plays for more than a few minutes at a time. After each game, horses are cooled down, rehydrated, and assessed before returning home, with recovery forming an essential part of their routine.

The responsibility doesn’t end when the season finishes either. Whether they continue playing, enjoy a lighter workload, or retire from the sport, the welfare of polo ponies remains a top priority even after their playing careers. And polo can be a second career too; we welcome many former racehorses into the sport and are proud to work with to celebrate them.

Every member of the polo community plays their part, and at the HPA our Equine Manager Vix Chapple and Welfare Chair David Morley lead the way. Vix has spent a lifetime with horses - in polo, polocrosse, reining, and more - while David’s commitment and knowledge is unparalleled. With the help of our Welfare Committee - including several vets - Vix and David work tirelessly to protect, promote, and monitor pony welfare through rules, welfare checks, drug testing and more.

International Day celebrates outstanding polo and world-class players, but above all it celebrates the remarkable horses who make the sport possible. To our grooms and ponies: THANK YOU 👏
