Yesterday’s working party at Toddington was a slightly interrupted affair with a footplate turn and a meeting taking people away from 76077. Still, we got a few bits progressed and nice to catch up over tea and cake. All photos TSLL.

Next weekend is the Cotswold festival of steam gala at the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire railway. We will have a stand on all three days and urge you to come along! There will be up to 8 locos in use each day and is an event not to be missed. Additionally the 76 group hope to have a few new and exciting items on display so do come and see us. Of course we cant beat last years event when the locomotive itself made an appearance! Where has the year gone!

60 YEARS … While undertaking presentations at Rainhill and Northwich, I couldn’t resist visiting the site of Sutton Oak (8G) locomotive depot where 76077 was based for most of its working life. It is now home to a large Morrisons supermarket and there’s no obvious sign that a shed ever stood there, yet there are clues. For instance the triangular layout of the site with a gentle curve following the former line from Peasley Jn to the Blackbrook branch on the left, and on the right, the abandoned and overgrown (a single track still in situ) that was once the main St. Helens-Runcorn Gap railway via Ravenhead and St.Helens Central and serving the St Helens chemical plant. Talking to local people most had no idea that at one time the shed was here hosting around 50 locos and employing getting on for 200 staff. Sutton Oak closed on 6 June 1967, remaining as a stabling point until the end of that year. Both pictures taken from roughly the same spot. (Top picture in 1967 by Jim Peden/Industrial Railway Society, bottom pic Ian Crowder, today)

Small update from a days painting at Toddington. The 4 new tender steps have been shot blasted and so I gave them a good coat of primer, the tender ladder was also then Undercoated . These will soon be able to go into store ready for when we start construction of the new tender, it it’s nice to have them ready to go.
