🌻Spring sunshine, fresh grass… and the pollen is back.

If your horse has started head tossing, snorting or rubbing their nose, pollen might be playing a part, but the tricky bit is working out why! Is it just a simple pollen irritation, or something more complex like headshaking?

Here are the two big ones to keep in mind:

• SPARAO – basically a pollen allergy, a bit like hay fever in people, and mainly affects the respiratory system.

• TMHS (trigeminal mediated headshaking) – a nerve related condition that can be triggered by pollen and causes those sudden, sharp, painful head flicks.

Understanding the difference really helps you figure out what’s going on and what support they might need.

Both can be triggered by pollen so it can be tricky to know which your horse has. Learn more about the key signs and if in doubt, discuss it with your vet who will be able to make a diagnosis.
