Harwich Haven Authority One of the UK’s largest trust ports, working 24/7 to protect, conserve and improve the Haven for all stakeholders.

We are one of the UK’s largest Trust Ports and our jurisdiction covers the River Stour, the lower part of the River Orwell, Harwich Harbour and a 12 nautical mile stretch of sea leading into the Haven. We provide Vessel Traffic Services to mariners, conserve and protect the channels into the Harbour and provide pilotage services to vessels using the commercial ports of Felixstowe, Harwich International, Harwich Navyard, Ipswich and Mistley.

🚨 We’re hiring: Health & Safety Manager

Do you have the experience and judgement to help keep people safe when it matters most?

We’re looking for a Health & Safety Manager to lead and coordinate safety, emergency preparedness and incident response across our marine, operational and shore-based activities.

This is a varied, hands-on role where you’ll have the opportunity to:

🔹 Strengthen safety management across marine, engineering and operational activities
🔹 Lead inspections, audits, risk assessments and safe systems of work
🔹 Develop and exercise emergency plans and response arrangements
🔹 Coordinate marine pollution and oil spill preparedness
🔹 Work with colleagues, regulators, emergency services and port partners
🔹 Lead learning from incidents and turn lessons into practical improvements

We’re looking for someone with significant experience in health and safety, emergency preparedness, marine or port operations, emergency planning or another safety-critical environment, along with the confidence to influence, challenge constructively and bring people together.

In return, you’ll join Harwich Haven Authority, where your work has a direct role in supporting the safety, resilience and long-term success of the Haven and its communities.

💷 Salary: £60,000 – £70,000

🐟 She’s back!

After a little bit of boat-tox, local artwork Esturiana by artist Anne Schwegmann-Fielding is back in her place on Harwich’s Ha’Penny Pier.

Originally created and installed on the pier in 2018 as part of the Harwich Festival of the Arts, Esturiana has become a much-loved feature of the waterfront. ⚓ What could your child’s future career look like?

When you think about careers in the maritime sector, you might think of ships and ports. But there’s so much more to it than that!

This October, we're bringing together around 120 Year 9 students from local schools for our first-ever Haven of Opportunities Maritime Careers Festival at The Waterfront in Harwich on 16 October.

Students will have the chance to:

👋 Meet employers from across the maritime sector
🔎 Explore a wide range of different careers
🚢 Take part in a hands-on maritime scenario
💬 Speak to people working in the industry
🎁 Get involved in activities and giveaways

With organisations including RWE, Boskalis, Hutchison Ports PPC and Freeport East, (to name just a few joining us) students will get a glimpse of just how broad the maritime sector really is.

From engineering and renewable energy to port operations, marine construction and much more, there are some fantastic career paths available right here in our local area. 🌊

We're excited to give young people the opportunity to meet the people behind these careers, ask questions and start thinking about where their future could take them.

🌿 We're giving nature a helping hand at Copperas Bay.

The next phase of our BUDS (Beneficial Use of Dredged Sediment) project is now under way at Copperas Bay.

Earlier this year, we used material from routine harbour maintenance to help restore areas of rapidly eroding saltmarsh on land managed by the RSPB. We're now moving on to the next part of the project, using sand from the main deep-water channel to recharge the sandbank within this important coastal site.

By putting naturally occurring dredged material to good use, we're helping to:

🐦 create and maintain valuable habitat for nesting birds
🌊 strengthen the coastline's natural ability to provide sea defence
🌱 support the long-term restoration and resilience of this sensitive environment

So, if you spot our dredging contractor Boskalis or our civil engineer contractors Amicus working around Harwich and Parkeston, you'll know there's more to it than meets the eye... they are helping us put material from the harbour back into the natural environment where it's needed most by supporting the restoration of Copperas Bay and making better use of the sediment we already have.

It's another step forward for BUDS and our work to find practical, nature-based ways to protect and enhance our coastline. 🌿

🥂 Raising a glass to our stakeholders!

Last Thursday, we hosted our very first Stakeholder Summer Drinks Reception on The Green in Harwich, bringing together many of the organisations and communities we work alongside throughout the year.

With drinks, canapés and plenty of good conversation, it was a lovely chance to step away from the usual meetings, catch up properly and spend some time together in a more relaxed setting. 🌿

It was fantastic to see so many familiar faces, welcome some new ones and hear what’s happening across the Haven. There was plenty of chatting, a few new connections made and, thankfully, the weather stayed on our side too! ☀️

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make our first reception such a lovely evening. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! 💙

🎉 Welcome to Team HHA, Archie and Belle!

We’re delighted to welcome Archie and Belle as our two new Marine Apprentices.

Archie joins us from Mersea Water Park, and has also had some experience in the hospitality sector. For Belle, this is her first professional role having left Suffolk One college earlier this year after studying Sports.

Both are looking forward to meeting everyone, completing their inductions and getting afloat, so we hope you'll join us in welcoming them to Team HHA! 🤝
