Cruise Tourism Boost for Kenya as MV Viking Sky Docks in Mombasa

A magnificent welcome unfolded at the Port of Mombasa as the cruise ship MV Viking Sky docked at Berth One, bringing approximately 750 passengers and 450 crew members to Kenya’s coast.

The vessel arrived at around 7:30am after sailing from the Seychelles, and passengers were greeted with vibrant performances from traditional dancers, showcasing the rich culture and hospitality of the Kenyan coast.

Tourists were swiftly transferred in a fleet of tour vehicles to explore some of Kenya’s most iconic attractions — including world-famous game parks, pristine beaches, and cultural heritage sites — highlighting the country’s diverse tourism offering.

Officials from the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), Kenya Tourism Board, and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) were present to receive the ship and its visitors. During the visit, KWS officially launched its new “Cruise-to-Park” initiative, offering tour operators a 30% incentive for bringing groups of 100 or more cruise tourists to Kenya’s national parks. The programme aims to strengthen cruise tourism and encourage more international visitors to experience Kenya’s wildlife.

Speaking at the event, KWS Coast Senior Assistant Director Ms Elema Hapicha described the arrival of cruise ships such as Viking Sky as a strong signal of Kenya’s growing reputation as a premier Indian Ocean cruise destination.

High in the branches of an acacia tree in Tarangire National Park, two birds can be seen engaged in their courtship and mating behaviour. During the breeding season, male birds often pursue females through the canopy, calling and displaying to demonstrate their fitness as a potential mate. Once the female accepts the male, the pair briefly perch together while mating takes place, a process that usually lasts only a few seconds but may be repeated several times.

This behaviour is an important part of the breeding cycle, ensuring fertilisation before the female begins nest building and egg laying. In Tarangire’s rich riverine woodlands and acacia forests, such interactions are common during the rainy season when food is plentiful and many bird species begin to breed. Observing these moments offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the natural rhythms of wildlife and the continuation of bird life in the African savannah.

With heavy hearts, ARP Africa Travel & Ranger Safaris mourns the passing of Dr. Jane Goodall, a luminary whose life’s work forever transformed our understanding of nature, conservation and what it means to live in harmony with the wild.

Dr. Goodall’s pioneering research on chimpanzees in Gombe, Tanzania broke barriers — revealing their intelligence, emotional depth, tool use, social bonds, and individuality.

For everyone who has trekked the wilds of East Africa, who has stood quietly beside jungle trails, who has looked into the eyes of great apes — we know the legacy she built is real, lasting, and true.

As we remember her, we recommit ourselves to the values she held dear: respect for life, protection of habitat, and partnership with local communities. May her vision guide us forward.

Rest in peace, Dr. Goodall. Your light will never dim.
