Just another random observation as a former Public Transport Evangelist turned filthy petrol-head scumbag, for September I booked time off work for my birthday and to get my car through its MOT.
I went to three gigs so far this month, next one is in London Tuesday night.
Bebe Barry's EP launch London EC4 The Harrow pub next door to the Inner Temple where I once spent a lovely summer doing a parking/security job years ago...drove to Ruislip Gardens, £6 pay by phone parking until 4am, Central line to St Paul's walked down the road, amazing night, easy journey home.
Then there was Rachel Croft's gig in Teddington. I booked a hotel near the Landmark Arts Centre and the train station to give myself the choice of public transport or driving. At the last minute I chose to drive all the way there and back. Parking was £6 for 24 hours under the hotel. The gig was amazing, £72 for a room with breakfast included from 6:30am, drove home.
Then my MOT ran out and failed first go so I had to book it in for some work.
So I had to get to Stoke Newington Earth theatre for Charlotte Church.
I was officer 548 for Hackney borough based in Dalston Kingsland so getting there was easy. Getting home? Not so much. Epic excruciating adventures through Willesden, Harlesden, Wembley. Tried getting a hotel room in Wembley. £198. No thanks. Got to Harrow then Wealdstone to one of my favourite taxi offices from way back in the day. Door locked, no one answering the phone.
Found a chicken shop open until 3am. Ended up in an Uber and getting home 3:45am.
At least the rain was warm.
So the plan is to do my usual drive to Northolt for my favourite free parking spot, Central Line to Tottenham Court Road, walk to the gig, enjoy the local area, tube half way home, drive the rest of the way, and be in bed by midnight.
I'm not saying public transport is completely useless... I am saying the average person STILL needs a car.
