In what appears to be the first piracy attack against a commercial ship since May 2024, two vessels have been attacked by pirates in the Indian Ocean during the past week. In both events, the embarked Armed Security Teams were able to prevent the ships from being boarded. Ships are advised that Pirate Action Groups (PAG) have been known to operate up to a 1000nm from the Somali coast and should comply with the guidance in 𝗕𝗠𝗣-𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, also considering the use of an Armed Security Team to best mitigate the threat from pirate activity. Maritime piracy is making an unwelcome comeback in 2025. The International Maritime Bureau recorded a 50% surge in global incidents during the first half of the year, driven largely by armed robberies in Southeast Asia’s congested Singapore Strait.

On 02 January 2025, it was reported that while anchored at Lagos Port, the tanker NORD MAVERICK was boarded by suspected sea robbers. Four individuals were seen on board.

Regional military authorities have released details of a complex incident involving an attack on the Greek-flagged Oil Tanker SOUNION. Reports stated that the ship was initially approached by 2 skiffs which came to within 3-4 cables, one skiff had up to 5 personnel on board and the other skiff had up to 12 personnel onboard. The onboard Armed Security Team fired warning shots at the skiffs who then returned fire before moving away from the ship. At 0500 UTC Today, the vessel reported being struck by two projectiles causing a fire, the vessel lost propulsion and issued a Mayday call over VHF radio. The vessel was reported to be not under command. Subsequent reports suggest the ship was attacked on at least 2 further occasions including by an Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV).

Armed pirates have successfully hijacked a merchant vessel 420nm southeast of Merca, Somalia. The vessel did not have an Armed Security Team (AST) embarked on the vessel at the time of the boarding. Recent attempted hijackings have been successfully repelled by AST, demonstrating the importance of complying with BMP 5 counter-piracy measures and the value that an embarked AST provides. The recent MV ABDULLAH hijacking demonstrated the profitable nature of piracy with a $5million USD ransom paid for its release. There have been 20 confirmed successful hijackings since November 2023 and a reported 4 active PAGs currently operating in this region.
