Have you tried these Turkish Delights! ⬇️

Having been influenced by various cultures throughout history, Turkish cuisine is rich and diverse.

And no visit to Istanbul (or anywhere for that matter) would be complete without indulging in the local delicacies.

Below we have put together a list of local food you must try out:

🥘 Casserole: a rich flavourful concoction of meat, seafood or vegetables topped with melty cheese.

🍢 Kebabs: a quintessential part of Turkish cuisine, from tender skewers of shish kebabs to flavorful doner kebabs.

🍱 Mezze: Multiple appetizers such as hummus, baba ghanoush, dolmas and muhammara (a red pepper dip which was our personal favourite!).

🍳 Menemen: eggs scrambled with tomatoes, peppers and Turkish spices. We had this almost every day for breakfast as we loved it!

🍞 Pide: a type of pita bread that is used for wrapping kebabs, dipping into sauces, or enjoying with mezzes.

🍬 Desserts: Must-tries include baklava (layered pastry with nuts and honey), Turkish delight and sutlac (rice pudding).

🫖Turkish Tea: Available in a variety of flavours and served in cute glasses.

☕️ Turkish Coffee: Famous for its strong flavor!

🥛Aryan Yoghurt Drink: Loved by the Turkish as it provides instant relief from the heat.

🍨Dondurma: Turkish gum ice-cream which is thick and stretchy. Buy it from an ice-cream vendor that puts on a playful show!

🥯 Simit (pictured): A popular circular bread with sesame seeds. Ask for Nutella inside!

Your packing guide for Istanbul🧳👗

Istanbul has many customs and traditions that you should be aware of when planning a trip.

1. Modest Attire 👚👕

As a tourist, all types of clothing is allowable, however, it is advisable to respect the local customs & religion by packing modest clothing.

2. Clothing for Mosques 🧕

Women must cover their hair, chest, shoulders, and legs and should aviod anything skin-tight. Men must cover their legs.

Most mosques offer wraps and scarves at the entrance for free, but some charged for these, so we recommend packing appropriate clothing like a long dress, trousers (not leggings) and scarves for visiting the mosques.

3. Socks 🧦

Shoes must be taken off before entering the mosques. Make sure to be wearing socks or bring socks with you to avoid having to walk barefoot.

Now you know what to pack in order to aviod being turned away at some of the attractions...

Istanbul’s Ultimate Transport Guide! 🗺️

During our trip to Istanbul we made an effort to utilise the fantastic public transport options to explore the city.

Armed with that knowledge, we have laid out the best modes of public transport to make the most of your trip… plus detailed a purchase that saved us so much time & money.

Lets begin…

Taxi 🚕: Zip through the city hassle-free with Uber. You can wave a local taxi down but they may try to overcharge you. Best to use in the morning with less traffic but once midday arrives it becomes a slower option.

Bus 🚌: Istanbul has well-connected bus network making it a great way to explore neighborhoods, historical sites, and even the outskirts of the city. Prices start at around 3.50 TL.

Tram🚊: Well connected through the heart of Istanbul, passing by landmarks like Sultanahmet Square, Galata tower and the Grand Bazaar. It even takes you to outskirt towns like Balat. Tram tickets cost approximately 2.60 TL.

Ferry 🚢: Taking a boat down the Bosphorus is a must so why not kill 2 birds and use the public ferry to explore the city. We use the ferry to avoid mid day traffic and visit the river front mosque & palaces. Fares start at around 3.50 TL for short rides, with longer trips like the Princes' Islands costing up to 10 TL.

Airport Connection 🛫: Istanbul's trains and buses offer transfers to Istanbul International Airport but we ordered an Uber for a simpler life and door to door service. Be warned though, Uber is frowned upon at the airport, so be quick when they arrive.

Now here is the secret to saving money and time…

Red Istanbulkart 🎟: This rechargeable card grants you access to all public transportation, including buses, trams, trains, and ferries. Simply buy & top up with credit at any of the transport stops, and enjoy discounted fares on each journey.

What is your favourite mode of transport to explore a city??
