Into the West - Rail Campaign

Into the West - Rail Campaign Into The West is the rail campaign for counties Derry, Donegal, Tyrone & Fermanagh.

We work with councils, elected reps, government departments, and community & business groups to make the case for better rail in the western half of the province of Ulster The railway line between Derry and Coleraine is one of the most beautiful in the world. In the past it was allowed to deteriorate and was threatened with closure. 'Into the West Rail Lobby' has been campaigning since 2004 for th

e upgrading of Derry’s train services. The campaign has the support of a range of individuals, trades unions, business people and organisations, NGO’s, political parties, etc.

Pressure is really starting to build now on the blatant East-West timetable discrimination on the Derry-Belfast railway line. Why should the quality of service you receive differ so dramatically - based entirely on which side of a narrow river you live? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

It's the most blatant & fixable of the many examples of NI's 'Two Tier Transport' approach - where resources are concentrated in the East whilst the West is left llargely abandoned. High time you bring this to an end Liz Kimmins MLA & Department for Infrastructure

Our thanks to Councillors Shaun Harkin & Rory Farrell for proposing & seconding the motion on this at the recent council committee πŸ‘ Let's keep the pressure on.

Derry City and Strabane District Council is to write to the Minister for Infrastructure Liz Kimmins expressing concern over β€œtimetable disparity” in rail provision in the North West.

Derry City & Strabane District Council is holding a public consultation about the London flights to/from City of Derry Airport. This is part of the process leading to the renewal of the PSO (public subsidy) contract for the London service next year.

In particular - the final section of the survey leaves space to add general comments. So please mention there the absurdity of having trains pass the airport without stopping. And the fact that better transport links would make you more likely to use the facility/London flights.

The news about railway station exceeding 1 million passengers in 2025-26 received great coverage in the media πŸ‘ Important to note that - as this article emphasis - Derry hit that total despite having one hand proverbially tied behind its back.

Equalising the timetables East and West of the Bann on the Derry-Belfast rail line, plus the promised expansion of UU Magee to 10,000 students, would add up to 250,000 more passengers to Derry's annual usage - making the city a Top 5 ranked station in NI.

It's time for Department for Infrastructure and Liz Kimmins MLA to finally make this happen by ending the 9 years of rail timetable discrimination against The West of the Bann.

Rail campaigners are celebrating the growth, with a caveat that numbers could increase further with β€˜modest investment’ from Stormont
